In October 2025, Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes, President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) and Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at Columbia University, joined @FinLogs on YouTube for a powerful conversation about the urgent need for nuclear disarmament and the real threat of nuclear extinction.
Dr. Hughes spoke about what drives her commitment to peace, drawing on her scientific background and work documenting the human and environmental legacy of nuclear testing. In the Marshall Islands, her research revealed radiation levels far above internationally accepted safety limits — in some areas comparable to Chernobyl — highlighting the ongoing impact on communities, ecosystems, and biodiversity.
The discussion also explored how massive military budgets could instead strengthen society through investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Reflecting on the Vietnam War and the courage of whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, Dr. Hughes emphasized the moral responsibility of truth-telling in the face of militarism.
At the United Nations, she continues to advocate for global cooperation through the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), reminding world leaders that true security lies in diplomacy, not destruction.
“We are living on the edge of annihilation,” said Dr. Hughes. “But we also have the power to step back — if we choose to.”
