    SANTA BARBARA, CA–Dr. Ivana N. Hughes, President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), and a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and Director of Frontiers of Science at Columbia University, has been appointed as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The TPNW is a landmark international agreement among states that prohibits the possession, development, deployment, use, and threat of use of nuclear weapons and also contains a robust framework for assisting victims of nuclear weapons and remediating contaminated environments. The TPNW entered into force on January 22, 2021.

    This group of respected scientists is tasked with studying key issues to advance nuclear disarmament and to better understand nuclear weapons risks and their consequences. Scientists from countries all over the world were nominated and chosen by the States Parties to the TPNW and include the following experts: Kouamé Rémi Adjoumani, Bashillah Bt. Baharuddin, Erlan Batyrbekov, André Johann Buys, Jans Fromow-Guerra, Ivana Nikolić Hughes, Bwarenaba Kautu, Moritz Kütt, Patricia Lewis, Zia Mian, Sébastien Philippe, Gerardo Suárez Reynoso, Petra Seibert, Noël Francis Stott, and A K M Raushan Kabir Zoardar.

    The creation of SAG is considered a very significant step in forwarding the work of the TPNW.  When commenting upon the critical importance of this group of scientific experts, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, President of the Second Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW and the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations since 2019, said, “This Scientific Advisory Group exemplifies the recognition of States Parties that further enriching knowledge of the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons and a shared understanding of the risks of nuclear weapons…will be important to ensure the effective implementation of the Treaty.”

    Dr. Hughes has been President of NAPF since August 2022, bringing with her an extensive knowledge of the science of nuclear weapons, a deep understanding of the geopolitical complexity surrounding nuclear disarmament, and endless amounts of commitment, enthusiasm, and energy.

    Said Hughes, upon hearing of her appointment, “My commitment to science and the scientific process is only matched by my commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons. Scientists – some perhaps unknowingly – contributed to the development of these ominous weapons and it is my strongest belief that scientists must be a part of the solution. That solution is the prohibition and total elimination of nuclear weapons. I am honored to contribute to the implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as part of its Scientific Advisory Group and to help ensure that this historic treaty can fulfill all of its promises. Those promises go beyond the lofty goal of ridding the world of nuclear weapons to include providing assistance to victims of nuclear testing and use, and remediating affected environments. In this manner, the treaty reminds us that we must put human beings at the center of any and all discussions of international security.”

    At its inaugural meeting, the Group elected Dr. Patricia Lewis and Dr. Zia Mian as Co-Chairs. Dr. Hughes was named Friend to the Co-Chairs. SAG will continue to meet this year and report on their progress at the Second Meeting of States Parties in New York later this year. The world eagerly awaits their findings.

  • NUCLEAR DANGERS WITH NOAM CHOMSKY AND DANIEL ELLSBERG

    NAPF’s latest Nuclear Dangers event, reflecting on the Ukraine War one year later, took place this past Thursday. The discussion with Noam Chomsky and Daniel Ellsberg was introduced by NAPF President Ivana N. Hughes, and moderated by NAPF Board Member Cynthia Lazaroff, with commentary by NAPF Senior Vice President Richard Falk.

    Nuclear Dangers: The Ukraine War, One Year Later.

    Noam Chomsky is a philosopher, cognitive scientist, linguist, political commentator, and lifelong activist. He is considered to be the world’s greatest intellectual. He has written more than 100 books, his most recent, The Precipice: Neoliberalism, the Pandemic and Urgent Need for Radical Change was published in 2021. Chomsky has recently commented about this critical time in human history, stating, “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history and are now facing the prospect of the destruction of organized human life on Earth.”

    Daniel Ellsberg is known to many as the original whistleblower, in 1971, Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers, a top-secret study of US decision-making during the Vietnam War. For this, he was charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 and faced a maximum sentence of 115 years. All charges against him were eventually dismissed on May 11, 1973. The author of four books, the latest entitled The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner, Ellsberg was awarded the 2006 Right Livelihood Award “…for putting peace and truth first, at considerable personal risk, and dedicating his life to inspiring others to follow his example.”

    Richard Falk is a professor emeritus of international law at Princeton University, and the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In 2008, the United Nations Human Rights Council appointed him to a six-year term as a UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967. His book, This Endangered Planet: Prospects and Proposals for Human Survival (1971), was selected as one of only three Books for the Century (Political and Legal) in the centennial issue of the magazine, Foreign Affairs. His book is also part of a set considered “essential for understanding the century ahead.” Falk’s memoir, Public Intellectual: The Life of a Citizen Pilgrim, was published in 2021.

    Cynthia Lazaroff is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and founder of Women Transforming Our Nuclear Legacy. She is the author of Dawn of a New Armageddon, a personal account of the Hawaii missile scare, published in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists on August 6, 2018. An expert on US-Russia relations, including on the history, geopolitics, military, cyber and escalating nuclear risks between these two countries, over the past forty years, Cynthia has been engaged in Track II and 1.5 citizen diplomacy and mediation efforts with Russia and the former Soviet Union.

    Dr. Ivana Hughes is President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and also a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at Columbia University, where she previously served as the Director of the K=1 Project, Center for Nuclear Studies. Dr. Hughes holds a BS with Honors from Caltech, and a PhD from Stanford where she was an American Heart Association Pre-doctoral Fellow. Her work on understanding radiological conditions in the Marshall Islands has been covered widely by national and international media, including by the LA Times. She has just been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) for the TPNW, which was formed recently to advise diplomats on all of the different aspects of the treaty.

    Castle Bravo is the largest nuclear weapon test the United States (US) ever conducted. It was a seminal event in the nuclear testing history of the Marshall Islands. It is also part of a shameful legacy for those of us who consider ourselves American. Today, the Marshallese people in the Marshall Islands and in diaspora, remember and commemorate Castle Bravo, an event that must never be forgotten.

    The Bravo explosion took place on March 1, 1954 in the northern part of Bikini Atoll, one of 29 coral atolls in the Marshall Islands. The explosion yielded the energy equivalent of 15 Megatons (or about 33 billion pounds) of TNT, or 1000 Hiroshima bombs. The blast evaporated an island, forming a deep crater in the Bikini lagoon. The resulting mushroom cloud reached a height of 25 miles into the atmosphere and spread radioactive fallout throughout the atoll, across other Marshallese atolls, and around the world. For decades, the US government has claimed that Bravo was an accident, both because it was more powerful than expected and because the winds had changed, leading to significant radiation fallout on populated atolls, like Rongelap. Recently declassified documents suggest that the claims of an accident are not truthful (see for example here, courtesy of late Bill Graham via Giff Johnson).

    Two communities have arguably been the most affected by Bravo: the Bikinians, who had moved out of their atoll in February of 1946 to make room for the US nuclear testing program, and the Rongelapese, who were living on the lush Rongelap Island, a mere 100 miles away, on that fateful day when radioactive fallout blanketed their islands and lagoon like snow. One could make the case that it is thanks to Bravo that Bikinians cannot return to live in their home islands more than 77 years after the US nuclear testing began. For the people of Rongelap, who similarly remain refugees in their own country, the loss of their land and culture is part of their history of suffering, which includes physical and mental health impacts stemming from the exposure to radiation in the aftermath of the Bravo test. By nightfall, many in the community, children in particular, were gravely ill with radiation poisoning. They were not evacuated until three days later and remain in exile nearly 69 years after Bravo.

    It’s not that people haven’t tried to return home. After the testing program ended in 1958, the people of Bikini slowly attempted to reoccupy their lands in the late 1960s, only to leave again in 1978, when it became clear that staying meant continued exposure to large and unacceptable doses of radiation. Measurements made from 2015-2018 by a Columbia University research team that I was a part of suggest that Bikini is still not ready to permanently host a multigenerational community, absent an extensive cleanup effort. Note that I stress the word “permanent;” a brief visit to Bikini is fine, but living there 24/7, 365 days a year for many years, is not. Moreover, given that radiation impacts people differently by age and possibly even sex, resettlement of a community that includes young children and pregnant women can only follow a careful decontamination program. Hence the emphasis on the word multigenerational.

    The situation is a bit more complicated in Rongelap Atoll, where our team found that radiological contamination on Rongelap Island, where people previously lived, has been largely, if not entirely, contained. But we also found disturbing evidence of high levels of external gamma radiation and high levels of plutonium in the soil in Naen, an island in the north of the Rongelap Atoll. Although the Rongelapese did not traditionally use Naen for their living quarters, they did use it – and other islands throughout the atoll – as a pantry island, where they collected food. The conditions in Naen and in other islands of the atoll need to be far better understood and potentially addressed, before a permanent and multigenerational community could return to Rongelap.

    The focus here on Bikini and Rongelap is not to say that other atolls were not affected, just that these may have been the most affected. At the time of Bravo, people were also living in Alluk, Likiep, Utirik, and throughout the Marshall Islands. A comprehensive survey of current radiological conditions is desperately needed for the entire country, with an emphasis on atolls closest to the former testing sites. In 2017, the Columbia team was able to visit Utirik and we found little to no evidence of elevated levels of radiation. This is encouraging, although not definitive, as our measurements were limited in scope and number.

    The Marshall Islands suffered 67 nuclear tests, which corresponded to 55% of the total energy yield of all US nuclear weapon tests. Bravo was the largest and the most devastating due to the fallout spread, but there were many other large (hydrogen bomb) tests. Several actually took place in the same part of the Bikini lagoon as Bravo, leading to a complex crater that today has a depth of ~50 m, and according to two Columbia studies, hosts a variety of radioactive contaminants (see here and here). The ocean is filling in this crater at a rate of about one foot per year (or one meter every three years), as if it knows that it must treat its own scars, with people seemingly not ready to heal them.

    The legacy of Bravo must not be forgotten. Indeed, it must be recognized, understood, and properly addressed.

    Dear NAPF family,

    Last month, photographs from around California, including from our home of Santa Barbara, reminded us that in a battle of human vs. nature, we can only hope for the best. The devastating images coming now out of Turkey and Syria are a further reminder that life is precious, that our planet is imperfect, and that we have plenty to worry about and to fix, without creating more messes ourselves.

    It is scary to think that a nuclear weapon explosion in a city would be like an earthquake, and a hurricane, and a wildfire, plus a nuclear disaster – all at once. But for us at NAPF, this is motivation to work as hard as we can to try to ensure that such a thing will never happen again. And the only way we can guarantee that it will NOT happen is to get rid of nuclear weapons.

    We have been hard at work since the start of the New Year on our mission to educate and advocate for a just and peaceful world, one in which nuclear weapons are abolished and stay abolished. Here are some updates on what we have been doing:

    Interns: This year we are fortunate to have two interns from Columbia University, (Annamaria Belevitch and Jefferson Sheng), two interns from Drew University (Sean Becker and Joseph Holzman), four from Williams College (Fenely Caba, Tong Gao, Michelle Phan, and Abigail Wallach) and one from Colgate University (Sophie Karbstein). All have immersed themselves in learning about the issues and helping to advance our mission in a variety of ways, including through our youth initiative, Reverse the Trend: Save Our Planet, Save Our People (RTT).

    Math for America: Over the last few weeks, I gave a series of three workshops to ~20 science teachers from public schools in NYC through an organization called Math for America. My workshop focused on the past, present, and future of nuclear weapons. In my last session, I answered one of their questions, which was what can they do to contribute to nuclear disarmament. I encouraged the teachers to teach their students about these issues, to give opportunities to them to learn more through independent projects, and to advocate for nuclear disarmament to their representatives in Congress. I also invited them and their students to visit the UN as guests of NAPF and hope that they will take me up on this offer!

    Events: We held a few events last month in the NYC area. Christian Ciobanu (our Policy and Advocacy Coordinator) and I spoke (with Benetick Kabua Maddison of the Marshallese Educational Initiative (MEI) and Seth Shelden of ICAN) at a Model UN Conference for high school students at Columbia on January 14. The event was very well attended and received. Christian and one of our interns (Annamaria Belevitch from Columbia) organized and spoke at an event at Drew University on January 19, which was also a success.

    On January 18, we organized and participated in an event at the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan, which was attended by diplomats, civil society, academics, and youth. The event was entitled “From the Pacific to the Steppes: Engaging with Frontline Communities on the TPNW,” and featured Ambassador Akan Rakhmetullin of Kazakhstan, Josephine Moote, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Kiribati, Benetick Kabua Maddison of MEI, Dr. Togzhan Kassenova, Senior Fellow with the Project on International Security, Commerce, and Economic Statecraft (PISCES) at the Center for Policy Research, SUNY-Albany, Veronique Christory, ICRC’s Senior Arms Adviser to the UN, and myself. The gathering was simultaneously a celebration of the second anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and an opportunity to discuss the treaty’s promises and its future, particularly as they pertain to affected communities.     I gave a talk last week to the Montecito Rotary Club at the gorgeous Music Academy of the West, where I discussed what we know about the science of nuclear weapons, their humanitarian consequences, and what we are doing at NAPF to get rid of them. It was wonderful to meet the Montecito Rotarians and to share with them information about our work and the motivation behind it.

    Essays and Interview: In an essay published by Transcend Media Service late last year, I argue about the need for peace in Ukraine; you can find the article here. When the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists updated their Doomsday Clock a couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article for our website on my personal take of the clock reading. Last month, a Turkish journalist Feyza Gümüşlüoğlu interviewed me for her program on international politics for EkoTürk TV, where I discussed both the need for peace in Ukraine and the imperative of nuclear abolition.     Vow from Hiroshima: We were excited to host the screening of The Vow from Hiroshima last Friday at the beautiful Santa Barbara City College campus! The wonderful Director Susan Strickler and Producer Mitchie Takeuchi joined us for the screening and conducted a Q&A afterwards. It was thrilling to share this inspiring and hopeful story of Setsuko Thurlow with our Santa Barbara community and to educate them about the TPNW, which Thurlow helped to bring into being. She, like so many Hibakusha, has been bravely and selflessly sharing her story to make sure that others never have to endure such a fate. We are grateful to Susan and Mitchie for sharing Setsuko’s story with the world in turn through this beautiful and uplifting film.

    A friend recently gave me a tote bag as a gift, which says “Woman on a Mission.” I’m tempted to use a sharpie to add, “to get rid of nuclear weapons,” but won’t. The bag is beautiful as is and I don’t need to ruin it to make a point. It is a privilege to be able to devote my time and energy to this cause. The job is not an easy one, but knowing that we have so many people who support us in spirit and in a myriad of other ways makes it all much better.   • From the Pacific to the Steppes: Engaging with Frontline Communities on the TPNW

    On January 18, diplomats, civil society, academics, and youth celebrated the upcoming second anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and discussed the treaty’s promises and its future, particularly as they pertain to affected communities. The event, entitled “From the Pacific to the Steppes: Engaging with Frontline Communities on the TPNW,” was graciously hosted by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan in New York, with a sizable audience joining virtually as well. NAPF was proud to help and participate in the event, which was co-organized by Kiribati and Kazakhstan, the Co-Chairs of the Informal Working Group on Articles 6 and 7 of the TPNW. Our youth initiative, Reverse the Trend: Save Our People, Save Our Planet, The Prospect Hill Foundation, and the Marshallese Educational Initiative (MEI) also co-sponsored the event. 

    In his introductory remarks, Christian N. Ciobanu, the Policy and Advocacy Coordinator of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and TPNW Adviser for the Mission of Kiribati, discussed the significance of Articles 6 and 7 in providing assistance to the victims of nuclear tests. Mr. Ciobanu emphasized the Convention on Cluster Munitions and the Mine Ban Treaty’s provisions on victim assistance served as a precedent for the TPNW’s provisions. 

    Following Mr. Ciobanu’s remarks, Ambassador Akan Rakhmetullin of Kazakhstan highlighted the need for the TPNW states parties to establish an international trust fund to help all victims of nuclear testing, including second and third-generation survivors. The crux for a tangible outcome lies in the international community’s ability to stand united in compensating the victims. 

    Offering a perspective on the Marshallese experience, Benetick Kabua Maddison of MEI shared the tragic legacy of U.S. nuclear tests that rendered parts of the Marshall Islands uninhabitable and decimated the country and its people ecologically and culturally. However, Mr. Maddison reminded the audience that the Marshallese were not passive victims and had stood up to the United States both during and in the aftermath of the tests. In this regard, he discussed his perspectives on the current COMPACT negotiations between the U.S. and the Marshall Islands. Examining the international community’s support for victims, Mr. Maddison asserted that the TPNW remains the best hope for the international community to eliminate nuclear weapons, giving survivors of nuclear testing one of the best tools to regain socio-political agency against their perpetrators.

    Continuing on the theme of the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons and the need for international institutions to support nuclear justice efforts, Dr. Togzhan Kassenova recounted the situation for communities living near the Semipalatinsk former test site in Kazakhstan. Dr. Kassenova shared a heartbreaking story of love and loss in the life of Bolatbek Baltabek, a victim but also a lifelong nuclear disarmament activist. Connecting to Mr. Maddison’s remarks, Dr. Kassenova stressed that listening to stories of nuclear legacy from around the world in parallel provides a catalyst for inspiration and resilience-finding.  Her remarks relayed the timeline of Kazakhstan’s powerful decision to dismantle and destroy Soviet nuclear weapons stationed on its territories and the Kazakh commitment to the TPNW as one of the first 50 states to ratify the treaty.

    Veronique Christory, ICRC’s Senior Arms Adviser to the UN, affirmed that the destructiveness of nuclear weapons had increased dramatically, while the ability of the international community (i.e., states and the ICRC) to assist has not. She reiterated the importance of victim assistance to communities affected by nuclear weapons as well as the TPNW’s symbolism of a world free from such destructive weapons. Ms. Christory emphasized that nuclear weapons are ultimately about “how much suffering we are willing to permit – and inflict – on civilian populations.” Such suffering is simply incompatible with international humanitarian law. 

    President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes, discussed the findings of a research team that she was a part of at Columbia University, which conducted several studies to understand the current radiological conditions in the Marshall Islands.  Dr. Hughes highlighted, in particular, the measurements conducted in Bikini Atoll, the site of the first nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands, and the most powerful test, Castle Bravo. Measurements of radiation in the food, as well as background gamma radiation measurements (the first published measurements since 1978), all suggest that Bikini is not suitable for population by a multi-generational community at this time. She finalized by stating that this kind of work is important in helping us to right the historical wrongs but that it is also a reminder of the need to rid the world of nuclear weapons and to enable the TPNW to achieve all of its objectives. 

    At the end of the panel event, Josephine Moote, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Kiribati, expressed gratitude to Kazakhstan for co-chairing the informal working group with Kiribati. She further highlighted the need for the international community to work together on getting rid of nuclear weapons.

    Following the panel discussion,  both the universalization of the TPNW, in particular the likelihood of the Marshall Islands signing onto the TPNW, and in providing context for the positive obligations under nuclear justice.

    Benetick Kabua Maddison expressed his hope that the Marshall Islands will sign onto the TPNW. He acknowledged that due to current security arrangements, the Marshall Islands has yet to sign the TPNW.

    On environmental remediation, Dr. Ivana Hughes expressed her personal belief that a cleanup may be possible in Bikini. She remains hopeful that with the TPNW process, there will be an opportunity for states to come together, alongside the scientific advisory committee and the international community, to address the parallel issues of both victim assistance and environmental remediation. 

    Dr. Togzhan Kassenova further elaborated on the situation in Kazakhstan, where an enormous geographical area was impacted by the tests. Dr. Kassenova stated that a proper clean-up would allow large pieces of land to be released for use by the public (or natural resources). As such, communities need access to the remediated lands that are within the parameters of the new Kazakh law on nuclear safety zones, while uninhabitable hot spots should be properly blocked off, limiting any potential for the harm they could cause. 

    Concluding the general sentiment of the discussion was Dr. Togzhan’s acknowledgment of the need for the public to trust the scientific findings when assessing the proper and responsible use of land.

    Yesterday, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a pre-eminent organization founded in 1945 with the goal to publish and pronounce upon the dangers of the nuclear arms race, and more recently other existential threats, such as climate change, announced their latest Doomsday Clock reading. The clock’s history dates back to 1947, when the Bulletin asked the artist Martyl Langsdorf to create a cover for the magazine; Langsdorf proceeded to draw a picture of a clock, with its hands at seven minutes till midnight. Her choice of image was meant to reflect the urgency of the moment and the fact that very little time was left to prevent a human-made global catastrophe before it happened. By 1949, the Bulletin started using the image yearly to ascertain the current state of global affairs and to indicate whether things have indeed gotten better or worse compared to the previous year and compared to all of the prior clock readings. Along the way, the Doomsday Clock became a symbol of all that is wrong in today’s world and a widely anticipated gauge of global risks and threats.

    Since 1949, the minute hand of the clock has been changed 24 times, reaching 17 minutes to midnight or the farthest from midnight in 1991, at the end of the Cold War. Prior to 2020, the closest setting was two minutes till midnight during the time period of 1953 to 1959, when both the United States and the Soviet Union not only acquired but widely tested hydrogen bombs. Hydrogen bombs, by using fusion, the process that powers the Sun and the stars, instead of just fission, increased the energy yield and destructiveness of nuclear weapons by orders of magnitude. The United States tested – in the Marshall Islands and Kiribati – bombs that were up to 1000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, while the Soviets tested hydrogen bombs that reached up to 50 Mtons or the equivalent of more than 3300 Hiroshima bombs. Most of those ultra high yield tests were conducted near Severny Island in the Arctic, with some taking place at the Semipalatinsk test site in Kazakhstan.

    In January 2020, just as the COVID pandemic was gaining speed, the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board set the clock at 100 seconds to midnight, the closest it had ever been, to reflect the deteriorating global security environment, as well as the accelerating impacts of global warming and the lack of meaningful progress on addressing climate change. The clock reading was unchanged in 2021 and 2022 and when the Ukraine War started last February, many began to wonder how the new and increased risk of nuclear exchange or worse would affect future clock readings. So like thousands of others, I was glued to my screen yesterday morning, anticipating with some trepidation what time the Bulletin experts would set for this year. The clock hands – clearly – do not impact the situation on the ground in Ukraine or globally, but I did have the sense that the reading would reflect the urgency of the moment, as it has for decades. Confronting this urgency in such a direct way did make me anxious.

    When Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, and others unveiled the clock to reveal 90 seconds till midnight, I breathed a sigh of relief. Yes, 90 seconds to midnight is awfully close and the closest the clock has ever been. I fully agree with this assessment, as the Ukraine War has undoubtedly increased the risk of use of nuclear weapons, which was already unacceptably high, while also causing other global problems and exposing our global interdependency. So I agree that we are worse off today than we have ever been. For those who discount the dangers, I would quote Prof. Marty Hellman from Stanford University, who says that “those who discount the risk of nuclear war stemming from the war in Ukraine are probably right, but probably is not good enough when our nation’s survival is at stake.” To this, I would add that nuclear war does not threaten just our nation and other individual countries, but human civilization as we know it and possibly the human species and other life on the planet. Assessing the risk as the highest it has ever been, seems right on the mark to me.

    My relief at hearing and seeing 90 seconds till midnight was due to the fact that I could have imagined an even closer reading of say, one minute till midnight. I believe that 90 seconds is a better assessment as it reflects the numerous opportunities to make things better. Coming out of a worldwide pandemic, we should be better prepared to confront future pandemics individually and within our communities and societies. Global warming is having such visible impacts around the planet (I write this from New York City where we have yet to have our first snowfall of the 2022/2023 winter season) that denial is no longer even a viable strategy and optimism about the shift to renewables in places like China and India does not strike me as premature. Finally, the Ukraine War has at last woken many people up to the continued dangers of nuclear weapons, dangers they seemed to have put aside after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Those dangers in fact never went away and the hope is that by allowing the whole world to see them for what they are, we can finally reach the decades-long aspirations of nuclear abolition.

    This brings me to my favorite point about why there is reason for hope. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) has now been in force for two years (we just celebrated its second anniversary on January 22), has 68 ratifications and 92 signatory states, and both lists of states continue to grow. I was fortunate to attend and participate in the First Meeting of States Parties last June in Vienna where I could soak in the optimism and the excitement of diplomats, civil society, academics, and youth, all working together to bring the promises of this historic treaty to reality. We at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation are hard at work on promoting, strengthening, and implementing the TPNW and are convinced that the treaty is our best hope for leaving a world free of nuclear weapons to our children. We must do everything we can to see it accomplish all of its objectives. After all, we only have 90 seconds to do so.

    2022 ha sido el año de la renovación. Renovación de nuestros temores a una guerra nuclear, pero también renovación de la esperanza de que realmente podemos conseguir un mundo libre de armas nucleares. En la NAPF, la renovación ha significado nuevas caras, nuevos eventos y nuevas iniciativas, aunque todo ello con el mismo fervor y devoción por la abolición nuclear que guiaron a David Krieger y Frank Kelly en la fundación de la NAPF hace 40 años.

    Cuando comenzó la guerra de Ucrania en febrero, pusimos en marcha rápidamente una nueva iniciativa que incluía una serie de actos virtuales, titulada Peligros nucleares (en Ucrania). Hemos tenido la suerte de recibir en estos actos al exgobernador Jerry Brown, John Burroughs, Jackie Cabasso, Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg, Richard Falk, Martin Hellman, Cynthia Lazaroff, Andrew Lichterman y Benoît Pelopidas, todos ellos destacados intelectuales, activistas, académicos y políticos.

    En 2022, Reverse the Trend – Save Our Planet, Save Our People (RTT) se convirtió oficialmente en una iniciativa juvenil de la NAPF, dándonos nuevas oportunidades de comprometernos con los jóvenes de todo el mundo. Felicitaciones a nuestro Coordinador de Política y Promoción, Christian Ciobanu, por todo lo que hace para que RTT sea una iniciativa tan vibrante. Este año hemos celebrado muchos actos centrados en la juventud y las comunidades afectadas por las armas nucleares, algunos de los cuales puede ver AQUÍ, AQUÍ y AQUÍ. Numerosos becarios han puesto su energía y enfoque en aprender y comprometerse con estos temas y estamos encantados de contar con su participación.

    Nos entusiasmó volver en 2022 a la programación presencial en nuestra sede de Santa Bárbara, incluso para el 29º Día Anual de la Paz de Sadako y nuestro Primer Almuerzo Anual de Mujeres por la Paz. Ambos eventos proporcionaron un sentido de propósito y empoderamiento. El Día de la Paz de Sadako contó con poetas locales, música en directo, comunidad y amistad en la encantadora Casa De María, en las faldas de Montecito. En nuestro primer Almuerzo de Mujeres por la Paz, rendimos homenaje a dos mujeres increíbles: Cynthia Lazaroff, estimada miembro de la Junta, experta en las relaciones entre EE.UU. y Rusia y directora de documentales, y la senadora Monique Limón, que representa al Distrito 19 en el Senado del Estado de California y que ha defendido una legislación innovadora sobre armas nucleares en California.     En 2022 también volvieron las conferencias y reuniones presenciales a nivel internacional y estuvimos encantados de participar en numerosas actividades, como el Foro de la ICAN en Viena, la Conferencia sobre las Consecuencias Humanitarias de las Armas Nucleares, la Primera Reunión de los Estados Partes del Tratado sobre la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares, la 10ª Conferencia de Revisión del Tratado de No Proliferación Nuclear (TNP), el Día Internacional para la Eliminación Total de las Armas Nucleares y mucho más. Hicimos declaraciones, facilitamos la asistencia de muchos jóvenes líderes y dirigentes de comunidades afectadas, organizamos orientaciones para jóvenes y trabajamos con diplomáticos y colegas de ONG para reforzar y promover el Tratado sobre la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares.     Uno de los momentos más destacados de este año fue comenzar en mi cargo como presidenta de la NAPF el 1 de agosto, que fue también el primer día de la 10ª Conferencia de Revisión del TNP (¡y el 21 cumpleaños de mi hija!). Otro momento destacado fue viajar a Estambul para asistir al Foro Internacional Política y Nuevos Paradigmas en el Siglo XXI, por invitación de los organizadores. Intervine en un panel centrado en las crisis humanitarias, que incluía el cambio climático, las crisis migratorias y la pérdida de biodiversidad, en el que hablé de las horribles consecuencias humanitarias tanto para los habitantes de las ciudades atacadas con armas nucleares como para todo el mundo. El último día del foro, me reuní con el presidente Erdogan y expuse ante los miembros del Parlamento turco los motivos por los que Turquía debería comprometerse con el desarme nuclear. Espero seguir consolidando esas relaciones y asociaciones.

    Nuestro calendario para 2023 se está llenando rápidamente. En Santa Bárbara, tenemos previstas proyecciones de películas, entre ellas la de El voto de Hiroshima de Susan Strickler (el 10 de febrero, ¡estén atentos!), una conferencia Kelly en marzo, una Velada por la Paz en mayo, un programa de verano para institutos en julio y agosto, el Día de la Paz de Sadako en agosto y un almuerzo de Mujeres por la Paz en otoño. Virtualmente, celebraremos más actos sobre Peligros Nucleares e Invirtiendo la Tendencia. Hay nuevas iniciativas en marcha para la acción legislativa en nuestro estado de California y estamos explorando oportunidades de litigio a nivel nacional e internacional. Pero en el centro de nuestras actividades estará el Tratado sobre la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares. Este tratado es nuestra mejor esperanza para librar al mundo de las armas nucleares. No nos detendremos hasta que cumpla su promesa y se destruya hasta la última ojiva nuclear. 

    Seguimos sintiéndonos inspirados por el poder de nuestra comunidad, por su amabilidad y generosidad y por su compromiso con un mundo mejor.     Dear NAPF Family,

    2022 has been the year of renewal. Renewal of our fears of nuclear war, but also renewal of hope that we can indeed bring about a world free of nuclear weapons. At NAPF, renewal has meant new faces, new events, and new initiatives, albeit all with the same fervor and devotion to nuclear abolition that guided David Krieger and Frank Kelly in founding NAPF 40 years ago.

    When the Ukraine War started back in February, we rapidly put together a new initiative that included a series of virtual events, entitled Nuclear Dangers (in Ukraine). We have been fortunate to welcome to these events former Governor Jerry Brown, John Burroughs, Jackie Cabasso, Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg, Richard Falk, Martin Hellman, Cynthia Lazaroff, Andrew Lichterman, and Benoît Pelopidas, all of whom are leading thinkers, activists, academics, politicians, and more. All of the information about the events, including the recordings, is available HERE. In addition to the series, we also wrote a Declaration of Concern, which you can read and sign HERE. We are excited to continue to bring to you the foremost thinkers on nuclear disarmament issues from the US and abroad in 2023 and to continue to raise awareness of the dangers that these horrendous weapons and their potential use would bring to humanity and all life on Earth.

    2022 saw Reverse the Trend – Save Our Planet, Save Our People (RTT) officially becoming a youth initiative of NAPF, giving us new opportunities to engage with youth around the globe. Kudos to our Policy and Advocacy Coordinator Christian Ciobanu, for all that he does to make RTT such a vibrant initiative. We have held many events this year with a focus on youth and communities affected by nuclear weapons, some of which you can see HERE, HERE, and HERE. Numerous interns have put their energy and focus into learning about and engaging with these issues and we are thrilled to have their involvement.

    We were excited to return in 2022 to in-person programming at our home in Santa Barbara, including for the 29th Annual Sadako Peace Day and our First Annual Women Waging Peace Luncheon. Both events provided a sense of purpose and empowerment. Sadako Peace Day featured local poets, live music, community, and friendship at the lovely Casa De Maria in the Montecito foothills. At our very first Women Waging Peace Luncheon, we honored two incredible women: Cynthia Lazaroff, an esteemed Board member, an expert on US-Russia relations, and a documentary filmmaker, and Senator Monique Limón, who represents the 19th District in the California State Senate and who has championed groundbreaking legislation on nuclear weapons in California.     2022 also saw a return of in-person conferences and meetings at the international level and we were thrilled to participate in numerous activities, including the ICAN Forum in Vienna, the Conference on the Humanitarian Consequences of Nuclear Weapons, the First Meeting of States Parties of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the 10th Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, the International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, and more. We made statements, enabled the attendance of many young people and leaders from affected communities, organized youth orientations, and worked with diplomats and NGO colleagues to strengthen and promote the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Earlier this month, two of our interns delivered statements at the United Nations Meeting on Information and Technology Security.     One of the highlights of my year was starting in my position as President of NAPF on August 1, which was also the first day of the 10th NPT Review Conference (and my daughter’s 21st birthday!). Another highlight was traveling to Istanbul for the Politics and New Paradigms in the 21st Century International Forum, at the invitation of the organizers. I spoke on a panel that focused on humanitarian crises, including on climate change, migration crises, and biodiversity loss, where I addressed the horrible humanitarian consequences both for people in cities attacked by nuclear weapons and also for everyone around the world. On the last day of the forum, I met President Erdogan and made a case in front of members of the Turkish Parliament for why Turkey should engage with nuclear disarmament. I look forward to continuing to build on those relationships and partnerships.

    Our 2023 calendar is quickly filling up. In Santa Barbara, we are planning film screenings, including of the Vow from Hiroshima by Susan Strickland (on February 10, stay tuned!), a Kelly Lecture in March, Evening for Peace in May, a summer high school program in July and August, Sadako Peace Day in August, and Women Waging Peace Luncheon in the fall. Virtually, we will hold more Nuclear Dangers and Reverse the Trend events. New initiatives are underway for legislative action in our home state of California and we are exploring litigation opportunities nationally and internationally. But at the heart of our activities will be the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This treaty is our best hope to rid the world of nuclear weapons. We will not stop until it fulfills its promise and every last nuclear warhead is destroyed.
