One year ago, David Malcom Krieger, a man of peace, passed away and left the world with one less champion. The outpouring of love and support that we have received over the past year has been deeply meaningful to us and to David’s family. A gathering in March, at the Music Academy in Santa Barbara, brought friends and family together to celebrate David’s incredible legacy. You can read more about the event HERE and see the booklet of remarks from the event below. Admirers have written about David (see for example, HERE and HERE). Events have been held and will continue to be held in the coming year. David’s message of peace and nuclear abolition has arguably never been more important.

David was born on March 27, 1942 to Herbert and Sybil Krieger in Los Angeles. The family settled in the San Fernando Valley where his father was the first pediatrician. David attended North Hollywood High before heading to Occidental College where he graduated with a degree in Psychology. He was getting his PhD in Political Science from the University of Hawaii when he met and married Carolee, his wife of 57 years. He did get the PhD, too.

David traveled to Japan to study as part of his PhD work and was so moved by what he experienced and learned in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that he dedicated the rest of his life to abolishing nuclear weapons and achieving peace. He was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War almost simultaneously. However, his clarity of mind and morals would not allow for participating in war and killing. He was, as far as we know, the first Officer in the Vietnam War to sue for Conscientious Objector status.

In 1972, David came to Santa Barbara to work as an assistant to Elisabeth Mann Borgese at the Center for The Study of Democratic Institutions. Here he collaborated with some of the greatest minds of the time on the subject of democracy. He and Carolee stayed in Santa Barbara, raising their three children among the blood orange trees and peacocks on the property they worked tirelessly to convert from rocks and weeds to the artists’ and gardeners’ paradise that it is now.

In 1982, David, Frank Kelly, Wally Drew, and two others founded the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. This was to be David’s proudest accomplishment. David Krieger led the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation until his retirement in 2019. His work, educating, advocating, writing extensively, and speaking all over the world about the dangers of the nuclear age and the insanity of the nuclear arms race helped advance the cause of peace with justice, particularly among young people, however, also with nearly everyone he personally encountered. David’s charisma, honesty, and depth of knowledge on the subject were hard to disagree with. David Krieger was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize ten separate years.

David developed a passion for karate when he was in Japan in his early 20s. As with everything he was passionate about, he dedicated himself to being among the best at it, earning his black belt in the Shito-Ryu form, and founding and running his own Dojo, Pacific Karate-Do Institute. He taught many Santa Barbarians karate in the 1970s and 1980s, and counted some of those former students among his closest friends.

David loved to play tennis and for years, his free afternoons and weekend mornings were spent playing with some of his other closest friends.

David was also a prolific poet. He found poetry to be an excellent way to express his impression of world events and daily joys.

David Krieger was a man of thought, of conviction, and of honor. He wanted to make the world safer, more peaceful, and ultimately a kinder and more just place for everyone and everything. He never stopped believing it was possible. In his honor, we admonish you to carry this work on with us.

Written by Prof. Richard Falk and originally published HERE by the Santa Barbara Independent on December 18, 2023.

Remembering my long, close, cherished friendship reinforces my sense of loss resulting from the death of David Krieger.

Our primary interests were unusually congruent. We were devoted to a world in which nuclear weapons and the danger of a nuclear war had become an unpleasant recollection rather than an existential menace. We both found great satisfaction as well as a sense of personal liberation playing competitive tennis as often as our schedules would allow. And we both expressed our deepest feelings about the world through poetry, both reading and writing poems.

David excelled in each of these spheres while I struggled, but despite this hierarchy of relative achievements, we managed to find pleasure through sharing much that seemed happily uncorrupted by the pressures of normal professional life.

David was well-known in Santa Barbara. He was the founding president of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation in 1982 until his reluctant retirement in 2020. He managed to sustain this nongovernmental organization (NGO) through the support from an array of donors, many drawn from local sources. He put together a Board of Directors and staff that shared his single-minded dedication to the abolition of nuclear weapons, which for him was the darkest cloud overhanging the future of humanity.

David firmly believed that reliable knowledge conveying the drastic havoc of a nuclear war would awaken both the citizenry and its governmental representatives to the menace that threatened the future, ever since the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The spirit of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation was well captured by its website adages: “For the human race, Not the arms race” and “Abolish nuclear weapons before they abolish us.”

David never lost his hope for such a peaceful future for the country and the world, despite his deep knowledge how deeply embedded nuclearism was in the political and economic consciousness of the nation, through the arms industry, a subservient Congress and media, and militarist foreign policy.

In lectures of invited peace luminaries and awards for life achievements, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation honored those who contributed to realizing its goals, including Daniel Ellsberg, Noam Chomsky, and Robert Jay Lifton, celebrated activists such as Nobel Laureate Mairead Maguire and Helen Caldicott, and notable personalities such as Queen Noor and Oliver Stone.

For such prolonged anti-nuclear efforts, it is hardly surprising that David and the Peace Foundation were nominated on several occasions for the Nobel Peace Prize. In the recent book, The Real Nobel Peace Prize: A Squandered Opportunity to Abolish War, the renowned Norwegian expert on this most coveted of peace prizes, Fredrik Heffermehl, writes convincingly that David deserved the prize more than many of its recipients because his life’s work and that of the foundation he created. Heffermehl believed that the foundation’s contributions were in keeping with what Alfred Nobel had in mind when he established the prize to realize a vision of a world without war. David’s focus on nuclear weaponry was the vital first step in achieving this goal.

If nuclearism was what David hated, what he loved, besides his family, was poetry. It was a great joy for me to exchange haiku with David on a regular basis. Here are two examples of his haiku that should be read in relation to the profound impact the Hiroshima experience had on David’s life:

    There, in the dark sky
    through the sycamore leaves
    the full moon

    A rare good fortune —
    to awaken from dreaming
    in the moonlight

Although disease made him unable to speak, David remained alert until the end of his life, undoubtedly mourning the terrible wars in Ukraine and Gaza, but I also imagine him glimpsing glimmers of light, none brighter than knowing that the foundation his life was built around would continue to thrive under the sway of its inspirational new president, Ivana Hughes. She shares David’s passion, exhibiting a nurturing energy far and wide that spreads the message of nuclear disarmament, effectively introducing the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation abolitionist perspective into the practical activities of the United Nations and many other global venues around the world.

A second glimmer of light is the entry into force of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2021. Although the treaty is opposed by NATO countries, including of course the United States, as well as by the other eight nuclear states, it is supported by governments representing a majority of the world’s peoples. David never lost his faith in respect for international law as the pathway to a peaceful world. This new treaty gives peace activists a powerful instrument by which to work toward a denuclearizing world, but it will not happen without a robust worldwide movement of people. That alone, with the capacities to mobilize sufficient democratic pressures, will lead governments — above all, ours — to finally do the right thing.

Above all, David believed in the transforming potential of love and beauty. His life was memorable for more than being a warrior for nuclear abolition. He was blessed by the love and the extraordinary support of his life partner, Carolee; children who made him proud; and grandchildren who kept him young as he grew old. It was Carolee who was so steadfast in her loving vigil of recent years as to make David’s transition from life to death as bearable, even mostly joyful, as it appeared to be.

Written by Bill Bhaneja and originally published HERE by Transcend Media Service on December 18, 2023.

Dr. David Krieger (27 Mar 1942 – 7 Dec 2023) was a nuclear disarmament advocate and a peace champion. He was a visionary. Not only a man of impeccable intellect, but also with the soul of an artist. He was a peace builder and lead co-founder of Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) established in 1982. The pioneering Nuclear weapons abolition monthly NAPF newsletter took one by surprise for its path-breaking non-partisan content put together by a group of scholar-activists. They stood up to criticize nuclear powers, mainly American polity for its double speak and inaction on nuclear weapons ban, their testing and proliferation.

The annual NAPF distinguished peace leadership honorees award established in 1984, its recipients took the award as a badge of honor for recognition of their courageous nonviolent peace work. A list of recipients includes independent thinkers and activists from all walks of life: Naom Chomsky, Setsuko Thurlow, Helen Caldicott, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Yehudi Menuhin, Jonathan Schell, Jody Williams, Carl Sagan, Daniel Ellsberg, Paul Ehrlich, Rev. James Lawson… around 40 such honorees since 1984 received the eminent leadership distinction. (Professor Glenn D. Paige, founder of the Center for Global Nonkilling was one of the recipients of the award in 2010.)

David Krieger’s deeply felt books of poetry emanated from his nonkilling convictions and compassion. His poems for the Letter from USA were not a lament or vent but their No More Killing sentiments were cri de coeur seeking ways to respond to the human tragedy produced by chauvinistic militarism, human apathy and consumerism. His poems wanted us to know– whether a just and peaceful world without nuclear weapons is possible? As he wrote: “The shadow of the bomb still darkens the forests of our dreams.” The titles of his poetry collections speak for themselves:

    • Banning the Bomb: In the Shadow of the Bomb – Poems of Survival
    • Portraits: Peacemakers, Warmongers, and People Between
    • At the Crossroads of War and Peace
    • Wake Up!:  God’s Tears – Reflections on Atomic Bombs Dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    • The Doves Flew High
    • Today Is No Good Day for War

The NAPF website (wagingpeace.org) shows under David Krieger’s leadership numerous awareness campaigns that raised critical issues stopping nuclear disarmament in and outside USA.

In 2019 after four decades Dr. Krieger stepped down as the President of NAPF passing on the ‘waging peace’ baton to Dr. Ivana N. Hughes.

    RIP Professor Dr. David Krieger

    (Translation by Ruben Arvizu)

David Malcom Krieger, man of peace, passed away on December 7, 2023 and left the world with one less champion.

In his honor, we admonish you to carry this work on.

David is survived by his wife, Carolee; his three children, Jeffrey (Claire), Jonathon (Kristen), and Mara Sweeney (Dan); his 8 grandchildren, Ryan (Clara), Eric, Zachary, Andrew, Nathaniel Sweeney, Alyse, Addison Sweeney, and Alice Sweeney; his great grandson, Louis (son of Ryan and Clara); his younger brother, Gary; and many nieces and nephews.

We mourn the passing of Harry Belafonte, entertainment icon, human rights activist, and long-time Nuclear Age Peace Foundation’s distinguished member of the Advisory Council. Mr. Belafonte passed away on April 25, 2023 in New York. He was 96 years old.

A trailblazing artist and a tenacious advocate for civil rights, Harry Belafonte’s contribution to both the world of entertainment and the fight for equality is immeasurable. With his enchanting voice and charisma, Belafonte not only brought Caribbean rhythms into the American mainstream but also used his platform to challenge and dismantle racial barriers. His friendships and collaborations with significant figures like Martin Luther King Jr. further underscored his commitment to social justice. As we mourn his loss, we celebrate a life that was not only lived in the spotlight but also dedicated to shining a light on the most pressing issues of his time. Harry Belafonte leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and resonate for generations to come.

  • David Krieger to Receive the 2020 Santa Barbara United Nations Association Peace Prize

David Krieger to Receive the 2020 Santa Barbara United Nations Association Peace Prize

SANTA BARBARA, CA–David Krieger, President Emeritus of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), has been selected to receive the 2020 Santa Barbara United Nations Association Peace Prize in the category “Creating Peace in the World.” The online awards ceremony will take place Thursday, September 24 at 7:00 pm.

The Santa Barbara United Nations Association Peace Prize began in 2017 to recognize the incredible work being done in the world by local individuals. “This prize truly recognizes our amazing community members waging peace around the globe, advancing the cause of human rights, and helping developing nations advance with key supplies and infrastructure,” said Peace Prize Committee co-chair Debbie Cregan, with Youth For Human Rights International.

The 2020 awardees also include Barbara Tellefson of The Unity Shoppe, an organization that empowers people experiencing poverty and hardship, and Thomas Tighe of Direct Relief International, which provides critical medical supplies for humanitarian aid globally.

David Krieger is a founder of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, and served as its president from the day NAPF opened its doors in 1982 until 2019, when he retired. He has been a leader in the global movement to abolish nuclear weapons and build a more peaceful world. Under Krieger’s leadership, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation created many innovative and important initiatives for building peace, strengthening international law, abolishing nuclear weapons and empowering peace leaders.

Krieger has lectured throughout the world on issues of peace, security, international law, and the abolition of nuclear weapons and has received many awards for his work for a more peaceful and nuclear weapons-free world. He has been interviewed on CNN, MSNBC, BBC and many other national and international television and radio programs.

Rick Wayman, NAPF’s current President and CEO, expressed his deep appreciation for Krieger, saying “This is such a well-deserved honor for David. In my travels around the world representing NAPF – whether at United Nations events, a conference in Hiroshima, or a lecture at a college in rural Wisconsin – I would always meet people who were effusive in their praise for David’s work. I often heard comments such as, ‘He inspired me to dedicate my life to peace,’ or, ‘I have many of his books on my bookshelf,’ or ‘I value his courage in speaking out for peace in all situations.‘”

Wayman went on to say, “All of the work that NAPF continues to do in Santa Barbara, around the United States, and across the world has been made possible by the vision of David Krieger and NAPF’s co-founders in creating an institution dedicated to achieving peace in the age of nuclear weapons.”

This year’s event theme is “Celebrating Santa Barbara Stars Changing The World” and features a special keynote speech by Ambassador Anwarul Chowdury, former UN Ambassador from Bangladesh, former UN Under-Secretary, and founder of the United Nations Culture of Peace organization. Krieger will be introduced at the event by Joe White, director of A Year Without War, who received the prize last year.

The event will be held virtually over Zoom. For reservations, please go to unasb.org. You do not need to be a UNA member to attend the event. The cost for general admission is $5.

“This is an unprecedented time in human history, to be sure,” said Santa Barbara United Nations Association President Barbara Gaughen-Muller. “Yet look at our three incredible finalists for the prize! They are beacons of so much good work being done to help our world, especially right now. It’s imperative that we continue to focus on encouraging that kind of work, and celebrate how one person CAN make a difference. That’s what the UNA Peace Prize is all about.”

Vaya aquí para la versión española

    The desert glowed
brighter than a thousand suns —
    everything changed

    Japan was clearly
    defeated … still the A-bombs
    found their targets

    The A-bombs killed
    and maimed massively —
    mostly civilians

    Hiroshima —
    city of a thousand cranes
    calls out for peace

    Nagasaki —
may you be the last victim
    of an A-bomb attack

    For every hibakusha
    many must obey, many
    must remain silent

    Those first A-bombs —
    small by today’s measure
    of insanity

    The mournful sounds
    of the shakuhachi
    take one’s breath away

  • My Last Message as NAPF President

My Last Message as NAPF President

In just a few days, I will retire after serving as President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation for the past 37 years. I give my deepest thanks to all of you who have educated yourselves and others through our books and monthly newsletter, who have spoken out for peace and nuclear disarmament through our Action Alert Network, and who have made this institution possible through your generous financial support.

When we founded NAPF in 1982, the world was adrift in nuclear dangers. We began with a belief in the necessity of awakening people everywhere to the dangers of the Nuclear Age – a time in which our technological prowess exceeded our ethical development. This dilemma continues today. For nearly four decades, we have been a steady, consistent and creative voice for peace and a world free of nuclear weapons.

As the calendar page turns to 2020, we are working to create a peace literate world, based upon empathy, caring, kindness and overcoming fear, greed and trauma: a world in which nuclear weapons can be abolished and stay abolished. Our Peace Literacy Initiative, headed by Paul K. Chappell, a West Point graduate, goes to the root causes of war and nuclear weapons. It is a profound way of waging peace.

As the next generation prepares to take the helm at NAPF, I ask you to believe in the power of our work now more than ever. We have exciting plans to scale up our Peace Literacy work and deliver measurable and increasing impacts over the coming months and years.

Your financial support is essential to making these plans a reality. Please consider a year-end gift to the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation so that we can maximize our reach to train students, teachers, and community leaders in 2020 and beyond.

    In peace,

    David Krieger
    President

  • 2019 Distinguished Peace Leadership Award Acceptance Speech

2019 Distinguished Peace Leadership Award Acceptance Speech

Thank you, Hal Maynard and Sandy Jones for the beautiful song; Perie Longo for reading my poems and for her poetic response; and Dan Ellsberg, Rick Wayman, Steve Parry, Rob Laney and Mara for their kind and eloquent remarks.

Thank you also to the Board of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation for this honor.

And thank you all for being here and making this Evening for Peace so special.

I have been very fortunate in my life to have a loving wife and family, and to have been able to do the work that mattered most to me – the work of trying to assure a human future.

When we founded the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, the world was adrift in nuclear dangers. We began with no resources, only a belief in the necessity of awakening people everywhere to the dangers of the Nuclear Age – a time in which our technological prowess exceeds our ethical development.

We took a chance in 1982, and here we are nearly four decades later. The Foundation has been a steady, consistent and creative voice for Peace and a world free of nuclear weapons.

In the mid-1980s there were over 70,000 nuclear weapons in the world. Today there are less than 14,000.

This is progress, but clearly the job is not completed. The use of only a small percentage of these remaining weapons could end civilization as we know it and possibly the human species.

To end the nuclear threat to life on our planet, we must overcome ignorance and apathy. We must, as Einstein warned, change our modes of thinking or face “unparalleled catastrophe.”

At the Foundation we are working to create peace literate societies – societies based upon empathy, caring, kindness and overcoming fear, greed and trauma. Our Peace Literacy Initiative, headed by Paul Chappell, a West Point graduate, goes to the root causes of war and nuclear weapons. It is a profound way of waging peace.

As the next generation prepares to take the helm at the Foundation, I leave to them these thoughts, which go back to our founding:

First, peace is an imperative of the Nuclear Age. Any war can become a nuclear war – by malice, madness, mistake, miscalculation or manipulation.

Second, we must abolish nuclear weapons before they abolish us. There is no doubt that this potential exists.

Third, to succeed will require extraordinary ordinary people to lead their political leaders.

I put great faith in Rick Wayman’s leadership skills. I know he will steer the Foundation competently into the future.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.” I would add, as I’m sure he would, that we must work diligently to attain this reality. That is what the Foundation does each day, and its work must continue.

It is up to all of us to assure that this happens. The future requires no less from us, and we should demand no less from ourselves.

Among the books I’ve written is a dialogue with the Buddhist leader, philosopher, poet and educator Daisaku Ikeda called Choose Hope. My hope for each of you is that you will choose hope, continue to support the Foundation, and help change the world.

I will conclude with a poem, “A Conspiracy of Decency.”

    A CONSPIRACY OF DECENCY

We will conspire to keep this blue dot floating and alive,
to keep the soldiers from gunning down the children,

to make the water clean and clear and plentiful,
