The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation’s annual Evening for Peace inspires new action for nuclear disarmament and peace by honoring the achievements of distinguished leaders. The Foundation presents its Distinguished Peace Leadership Award and/or its World Citizenship Award to some of today’s most important leaders.

2025 Evening for Peace

Honoring Martin Sheen, an acclaimed actor, with the Daniel Ellsberg Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity, and Pope Francis (posthumously) as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his moral leadership on nuclear abolition. This event took place on September 26, 2025.

2019 Evening for Peace

Honoring David Krieger as a Distinguished Peace Leader. He was a founder of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and served as President of the Foundation from 1982 till 2019, and more recently as President Emeritus. Dr. Krieger was a founder and Global Council member of Abolition 2000, chair of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility, councilor on the World Future Council, vice-chair of the Middle Powers Initiative, cochair of the Council’s Peace and Disarmament Commission, Panel Chair of the Citizens’ Hearing on the Legality of U.S. Actions in Iraq, and member of the Jury of Conscience of the World Tribunal on Iraq. He also served as a judge pro term for the Santa Barbara Municipal and Superior Courts for 20 years. He lectured throughout the United States, Europe and Asia on peace, security, international law, and the abolition of nuclear weapons and was an author of many books and studies of peace in the Nuclear Age. Dr. Krieger received numerous national and international awards for his advocacy of nonviolence, peace, and justice. The event took place on October 20, 2019.

2018 Evening for Peace

Honoring Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) from 2014 to 2023, and ICAN, the Nobel Peace Prize winner (2017), as Distinguished Peace Leaders. The event took place on October 21, 2018.

2017 Evening for Peace

Honoring Dr. Ira Helfand and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) as Distinguished Peace Leaders. Dr. Helfand is a co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, a past president of IPPNW, and a recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. The event took place on October 22, 2017.

Honoring Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, as a Distinguished Peace Leader. She is a Hiroshima Peace Ambassador and a recipient of the Order of Canada Medal, the highest honor for Canadian civilians. The event took place on October 25, 2015.

Honoring Reverend George Regas as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his courage, commitment and vision in building interfaith movements for nuclear disarmament and peace, and Stanley Sheinbaum, a peace activist and human rights advocate, with the World Citizenship Award for his sustained and courageous efforts to forge peace and create new dialogue between old adversaries. The event took place on November 22, 2008.

2007 Evening for Peace

Honoring Peter, Paul & Mary for their courage and persistence in reaching millions of people with songs of conscience while lending their talents for over four decades to numerous projects promoting peace and justice. The event took place on September 17, 2007.

2006 Evening for Peace

Honoring Bianca Jagger, social activist, human rights advocate, and actress, with the World Citizenship Award for her global efforts to secure human rights, human dignity and social, economic and legal justice for all, and Blase Bonpane, peace and justice activist, as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his lifelong efforts on behalf of the poor and disenfranchised. The event took place on October 28, 2006.

2005 Evening for Peace

Honoring Daniel Ellsberg, political activist, economist, and American military analyst, as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his decades of work for peace and nuclear disarmament, and Senator Douglas Roche, O.C., founder of the Middle Powers Initiative, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The event took place on October 29, 2005.

2004 Evening for Peace

Honoring Walter Cronkite, internationally renowned journalist and pioneer of television news programming, as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his uncompromising integrity in reporting the news and his commitment to building a more peaceful world. The event took place on October 23, 2004.

2003 Evening for Peace

Honoring Harry Belafonte with the World Citizenship Award for his lifelong service to humanity and the children of the world, and Jonathan Schell as a Distinguished Peace Leader in recognition of his clear, intelligent and tireless voice for ending the nuclear weapons threat to humanity. 2002 Evening for Peace

Honoring His Excellency Arthur N.R. Robinson, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his key role in the creation of a permanent International Criminal Court (ICC), and Robert Muller, an international civil servant and assistant secretary general, with the World Citizenship Award. Dr. Robert Woetzel was honored posthumously as a Distinguished Peace Leader for dedicating his life to the establishment of an International Criminal Court. The event took place on October 24, 2002.

Honoring Hafsat Abiola, founder of the Kudirat Initiative for Nigerian Democracy, an organization that works for the rights of women and children in Nigeria and throughout Africa, and Craig Kielburger, who founded Free the Children at age 12, as Distinguished Peace Leaders. Honoring King Hussein bil Talal of Jordan, a steadfast and outspoken advocate of peace, as a Distinguished Peace Leader. His wife, Her Majesty Queen Noor al Hussein, accepted the award on behalf of her late husband. The event took place on April 6, 2000.

Honoring General George Lee Butler, a former Commander-in-Chief of the United States Strategic Command who became a passionate voice for nuclear weapons abolition, as a Distinguished Peace Leader. The event took place on April 30, 1999.

Honoring Jody Williams, Nobel Peace Laureate (1997), Founding Coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, and a leader in achieving the 1997 international treaty to ban landmines. The event took place on April 4, 1998.

Honoring Dr. Carl Sagan, Astronomer and Pulitzer prize-winning author, as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his outspoken advocacy of peace and nuclear disarmament. The event took place on April 24, 1993.

Honoring Mairead Corrigan Maguire, co-founder of the Community of the Peace People in Northern Ireland and a Nobel Peace Laureate (1976), as a Distinguished Peace Leader for her moral leadership and steadfast commitment to social justice and nonviolence.

Honoring His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, Spiritual and Temporal Leader of the Tibetan People and a Nobel Peace Laureate (1989), as a Distinguished Peace Leader for his advocacy of universal responsibility and a non-violent solution to restoring the independence of Tibet.
