In October 2025, Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes, President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) and Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at Columbia University, joined Tucker Carlson for a powerful conversation about the urgent need for nuclear disarmament and the real threat of nuclear extinction.
Dr. Hughes spoke about what drives her commitment to peace, drawing on her scientific background and work documenting the human and environmental legacy of nuclear testing. In the Marshall Islands, her research revealed radiation levels far above internationally accepted safety limits, highlighting the ongoing impact on communities, ecosystems, and biodiversity.
The discussion also explored how military spending could instead support education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Reflecting on her work and the moral responsibility of speaking truth to power, Dr. Hughes said,
“We cannot afford to normalize the existence of nuclear weapons. Every day they exist, the risk of catastrophe grows.”
At the United Nations, she continues to advocate for global cooperation through the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), reminding world leaders that true security lies in diplomacy, not destruction.
