On October 11, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo of Japan “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”
We are thrilled by the Committee’s outstanding choice. For decades, Nihon Hidankyo and the Hibakusha—the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki—have been at the heart of the nuclear disarmament movement. Their courageous testimony serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of nuclear weapons and the urgent need to eliminate nuclear weapons forever.
In July, Dr. Ivana Hughes visited Nagasaki, where she had the honor of meeting Mr. Terumi Tanaka, Nihon Hidankyo’s long-time Secretary-General, and Ms. Shizuko Mitamura, both survivors of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Dr. Hughes found their kindness, resilience, and unwavering dedication deeply inspiring. Their stories, shaped by tragedy but rooted in hope, reflect the spirit of the peace movement.
