I am deeply humbled to be with all of you today in this historic location where 80 years ago lay a city in ruins, ashes made of flesh, bedding, pots, and bowls of rice, burned and sickened children, and thousands upon thousands who had lost everything, including most importantly, their loved ones. It was a sight of nightmares or brutal fiction, and yet, after 8:15 in the morning of August 6 of 1945, it was the reality of every single person living in Hiroshima.
I have read books, looked at photographs, drawings, and paintings, watched videos, and listened to the testimonies of hibakusha to learn about what happened under the mushroom clouds. Although I recognize that I will never fully understand what it was like to survive in a city of death, of endless pain, of suffering beyond one’s imagination, what I have learned has instilled in me a belief that nuclear weapons must be abolished and eliminated from the face of the planet. What I have learned is that such suffering, however incomprehensible, must never happen again. Not to you, not to me. Not to your family, nor to mine. Not to anyone’s child, mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, uncle, aunt or cousin. Not to anyone’s friend. Not to any human being or any other life form that we so fortunately share this beautiful planet with.
When the first oleander came back to Hiroshima in the spring of 1946, it brought with it more than a touch of beauty. It brought back hope. Over the decades, the hibakusha have held onto that hope, praying and wishing not just for life itself, but that their message of peace will help to end the insanity of war in the nuclear age.
When I speak about nuclear weapons, I often talk about the unique way in which their effects transcend time and space, the way in which nuclear war in one part of the world today would impact the entire globe for thousands of years. Standing here with all of you, I now recognize that something else transcends time and space: the message of the hibakusha.
Those hibakusha who are still alive today, like Setsuko Thurlow, and Terumi Tanaka, and Masako Wada, and Yoshiyuki Midou, have been able to teach countless individuals, young and old, from across the globe about the inconceivable devastation that nuclear weapons have wrought and could cause in the future. Those who have already passed on, like Sumiteru Taneguchi and Kazuko Ikegame, worked toward nuclear abolition till their last day on Earth. One hibakusha, Sadako Sasaki, who passed away in 1955 at age 12 from leukemia, turned the paper crane into a universal and enduring message of peace. I would like to share with you a poem that I wrote for Sadako. The poem is entitled:
I think of you often
I think of you often,
Dear Sadako,
Sometimes I sit in my favorite chair,
And I cryI think about where I was
When I was two
Toddling around
In my safe homeAnd I think of you
At age two
Bathing in radiation
In flattened and burning HiroshimaI think about where I was

Sadako’s story, just like so many other hibakusha stories, may bring you to tears, but it should also cause you to hope. In their timeless book, written as a dialogue at the dawn of the 21st Century, Daisaku Ikeda, the Founder and President of Soka Gakkai International, and David Krieger, the Co-Founder and President Emeritus of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, implored us to choose hope that a better world is possible, that a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons is possible. Throughout their own lives, they had chosen hope and worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality. When they passed away, mere weeks from one another at the end of 2023, all of us at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and Soka Gakkai International recommitted to choosing hope, in their names and in our own. Today, we gather to honor this commitment. Today we gather to set the world ablaze, not with flames borne out of chain reactions, but with flames of hope: hope of peace and nuclear abolition. The kind of hope that would make Daisaku Ikeda and David Krieger proud.
Yesterday, about 40 anti-nuclear activists, experts, academics, and youth gathered on these grounds to visit the Peace Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum, and to chart a plan for the future through a series of workshop discussions. We have produced an action plan not just for the disarmament community, but for every person who chooses hope over despair, peace over war, abolition over annihilation. Whether you are here with us today or whether you are listening to this from afar, I hope that you will join us in this existential journey.
Throughout the rest of today’s program, you will hear from some of the workshop participants about what brings them to this topic and what key actions they hope to undertake as we pursue the Choose Hope action plan.
I am immensely grateful to all of you for joining us today, to everyone who works on peace and disarmament issues in Japan, the United States, and beyond, and to our amazing partners at Soka Gakkai International for the privilege of working together towards a better world, for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing gathering, and for the honor of calling them our friends in action. Annie has written seven books, including the highly acclaimed book Nuclear War: A Scenario and The Pentagon’s Brain, which was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. Annie’s appearances include both traditional and new media, and she regularly speaks in front of audiences from military generals to business executives. Since meeting her last year, I’ve had the enormous pleasure of spending time with Annie in Rome and at the Vatican, at the United Nations in New York, and in Santa Barbara. She is not only one of the most capable investigative writers, she is also one of the warmest and kindest people I know. Her book Nuclear War: A Scenario gives me hope that we can finally wake up to the reality of the insanity of nuclear weapons and end the threat they pose once and for all.
