    Yesterday, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a pre-eminent organization founded in 1945 with the goal to publish and pronounce upon the dangers of the nuclear arms race, and more recently other existential threats, such as climate change, announced their latest Doomsday Clock reading. The clock’s history dates back to 1947, when the Bulletin asked the artist Martyl Langsdorf to create a cover for the magazine; Langsdorf proceeded to draw a picture of a clock, with its hands at seven minutes till midnight. Her choice of image was meant to reflect the urgency of the moment and the fact that very little time was left to prevent a human-made global catastrophe before it happened. By 1949, the Bulletin started using the image yearly to ascertain the current state of global affairs and to indicate whether things have indeed gotten better or worse compared to the previous year and compared to all of the prior clock readings. Along the way, the Doomsday Clock became a symbol of all that is wrong in today’s world and a widely anticipated gauge of global risks and threats.

    Since 1949, the minute hand of the clock has been changed 24 times, reaching 17 minutes to midnight or the farthest from midnight in 1991, at the end of the Cold War. Prior to 2020, the closest setting was two minutes till midnight during the time period of 1953 to 1959, when both the United States and the Soviet Union not only acquired but widely tested hydrogen bombs. Hydrogen bombs, by using fusion, the process that powers the Sun and the stars, instead of just fission, increased the energy yield and destructiveness of nuclear weapons by orders of magnitude. The United States tested – in the Marshall Islands and Kiribati – bombs that were up to 1000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, while the Soviets tested hydrogen bombs that reached up to 50 Mtons or the equivalent of more than 3300 Hiroshima bombs. Most of those ultra high yield tests were conducted near Severny Island in the Arctic, with some taking place at the Semipalatinsk test site in Kazakhstan.

    In January 2020, just as the COVID pandemic was gaining speed, the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board set the clock at 100 seconds to midnight, the closest it had ever been, to reflect the deteriorating global security environment, as well as the accelerating impacts of global warming and the lack of meaningful progress on addressing climate change. The clock reading was unchanged in 2021 and 2022 and when the Ukraine War started last February, many began to wonder how the new and increased risk of nuclear exchange or worse would affect future clock readings. So like thousands of others, I was glued to my screen yesterday morning, anticipating with some trepidation what time the Bulletin experts would set for this year. The clock hands – clearly – do not impact the situation on the ground in Ukraine or globally, but I did have the sense that the reading would reflect the urgency of the moment, as it has for decades. Confronting this urgency in such a direct way did make me anxious.

    When Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, and others unveiled the clock to reveal 90 seconds till midnight, I breathed a sigh of relief. Yes, 90 seconds to midnight is awfully close and the closest the clock has ever been. I fully agree with this assessment, as the Ukraine War has undoubtedly increased the risk of use of nuclear weapons, which was already unacceptably high, while also causing other global problems and exposing our global interdependency. So I agree that we are worse off today than we have ever been. For those who discount the dangers, I would quote Prof. Marty Hellman from Stanford University, who says that “those who discount the risk of nuclear war stemming from the war in Ukraine are probably right, but probably is not good enough when our nation’s survival is at stake.” To this, I would add that nuclear war does not threaten just our nation and other individual countries, but human civilization as we know it and possibly the human species and other life on the planet. Assessing the risk as the highest it has ever been, seems right on the mark to me.

    My relief at hearing and seeing 90 seconds till midnight was due to the fact that I could have imagined an even closer reading of say, one minute till midnight. I believe that 90 seconds is a better assessment as it reflects the numerous opportunities to make things better. Coming out of a worldwide pandemic, we should be better prepared to confront future pandemics individually and within our communities and societies. Global warming is having such visible impacts around the planet (I write this from New York City where we have yet to have our first snowfall of the 2022/2023 winter season) that denial is no longer even a viable strategy and optimism about the shift to renewables in places like China and India does not strike me as premature. Finally, the Ukraine War has at last woken many people up to the continued dangers of nuclear weapons, dangers they seemed to have put aside after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Those dangers in fact never went away and the hope is that by allowing the whole world to see them for what they are, we can finally reach the decades-long aspirations of nuclear abolition.

    This brings me to my favorite point about why there is reason for hope. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) has now been in force for two years (we just celebrated its second anniversary on January 22), has 68 ratifications and 92 signatory states, and both lists of states continue to grow. I was fortunate to attend and participate in the First Meeting of States Parties last June in Vienna where I could soak in the optimism and the excitement of diplomats, civil society, academics, and youth, all working together to bring the promises of this historic treaty to reality. We at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation are hard at work on promoting, strengthening, and implementing the TPNW and are convinced that the treaty is our best hope for leaving a world free of nuclear weapons to our children. We must do everything we can to see it accomplish all of its objectives. After all, we only have 90 seconds to do so.

    For our second Spotlight highlighting people in the nuclear disarmament sphere, we are excited to feature Anna Ikeda, UN NGO (Non-governmental organization) Representative from Soka Gakkai International (SGI). Soka Gakkai International is an NGO based in Japan promoting peace, culture, and education. Anna’s work centers around disarmament, particularly nuclear abolition and stopping killer robots.

    Tell us about your childhood and high school years. What were your interests back then?

    I was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. I think a turning point was when my family and I moved to Singapore for my father’s work right before I started fifth grade, and we lived there for two years. I still remember a family trip to Malaysia during that time, when we visited a rubber plantation, and seeing children my age or younger working there in the heat. Experiences like that opened my eyes to issues of poverty, inequality, human rights and social justice. I also learned about the history of World War II from the perspectives of Southeast Asia, and how the people there were impacted by Japan’s atrocities.

    In high school, I was very active in choir and student council. These activities provided leadership opportunities where I learned to support and work with others.

     

    What did you study in college?

    I studied international studies at Soka University of America in Orange County in California. I also studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina for one semester. After my undergraduate, I went to the University of Denver to pursue a master’s degree in International Human Rights.

     

    When did you become interested in peace and nuclear weapons issues and why/how?

    My organization, Soka Gakkai International, has been working on nuclear weapons issues for many decades, inspired by a declaration calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons made in 1957 by then president of the Soka Gakkai, Josei Toda.

    But to be honest, even though I understood the importance of the issue, I didn’t really develop personal interests until my twenties. Soon after completing my master’s, I was appointed as SGI-USA’s national coordinator of university-level students, and that’s when I was asked to help design and lead a campaign to discuss the issue of nuclear weapons on university campuses through our SGI campus clubs. Through examining the issue of nuclear weapons through the perspectives of my faith, I came to understand why as a Buddhist, I must care about, and take action for, peace and nuclear abolition.

     

    What are you working on at SGI?

    We continue to support the universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as a partner organization of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). In addition to working to increase signatories and States Parties of the treaty in places like the Caribbean, we also have been advocating for the importance of peace and disarmament education as a way to universalize the norms of the TPNW. In this regard, I was really excited about the side event on humanitarian disarmament education NAPF invited us to co-organize during the UN General Assembly First Committee last October.

    As an organization working to promote peace, culture, and education based on Buddhist principles, SGI has also been active in interfaith communities. For insurance, we have helped coordinate a number of interfaith statements to the NPT, TPNW negotiations, and other disarmament fora to unite the voices of the communities of faith across various faith traditions. As an SGI representative, I am also actively involved in the United Religions Initiative’s Voices for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons cooperation circle. Some of us from the Voices group plan to attend the Parliament of the World’s Religions this summer to raise awareness among the faith leaders of the issue of nuclear weapons.

     

    What are you most passionate about in your work?

    I think it is important to broaden the network of people concerned about and taking action on nuclear weapons, to help everyone understand that it affects all of us. For that reason, I believe in the importance of disarmament education, and I feel inspired by the grassroots educational efforts of Soka Gakkai organizations in various countries. They inform the public of the threats of nuclear weapons and what each person can do to address the issue through activities like exhibitions, seminars and lectures.

    In connection to this, SGI has worked to bring an intersectional approach to our disarmament work in the last several years. It’s important that the perspectives and expertises of people from diverse backgrounds are highlighted when we speak about nuclear weapons abolition. In fact, such diverse participation and engagement would lead to better outcomes.

     

    Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

    I have been a student of nonviolence for close to 10 years, and currently serve on the board of the Metta Center for Nonviolence. I feel that nuclear weapons are the embodiment of ultimate violence, and at the same time, studying nonviolence has helped me strengthen my conviction that an international system that does not depend on the use or threat of mass violence is possible. I truly feel, as humanity, we are much better than that.

    Please join us for a special screening of The Vow From Hiroshima, the moving story of Setsuko Thurlow, a 13-year-old girl living in Hiroshima when the first atomic bomb was dropped on a civilian population in 1945. Ever since that day, Thurlow has dedicated her life to abolishing nuclear weapons.

    The film screening will be held at Santa Barbara City College Fé Bland Forum on Friday, February 10, 2023, 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Q & A with Director, Susan Strickler, and Producer, Mitchie Takeuchi, will follow the screening. Parking will be free on the SBCC campus.

    “The Vow From Hiroshima is an intimate portrait of Setsuko Thurlow, a passionate survivor of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. She was 13 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. Her moving story is told through the lens of her growing friendship with a second-generation survivor, Mitchie Takeuchi.

    Setsuko was miraculously pulled out of a fiery building after the bomb was dropped. That experience shaped her life and she endeavored to keep a pledge she made to her friends – that no one should ever again experience the same horrible fate.

    The film follows Setsuko through her decades of activism up to the current moment when she finally achieves her dream of a Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty.”

    En 2022, Reverse the Trend – Save Our Planet, Save Our People (RTT) se convirtió oficialmente en una iniciativa juvenil de la NAPF, dándonos nuevas oportunidades de comprometernos con los jóvenes de todo el mundo. Felicitaciones a nuestro Coordinador de Política y Promoción, Christian Ciobanu, por todo lo que hace para que RTT sea una iniciativa tan vibrante. Este año hemos celebrado muchos actos centrados en la juventud y las comunidades afectadas por las armas nucleares, algunos de los cuales puede ver AQUÍ, AQUÍ y AQUÍ.     Nos entusiasmó volver en 2022 a la programación presencial en nuestra sede de Santa Bárbara, incluso para el 29º Día Anual de la Paz de Sadako y nuestro Primer Almuerzo Anual de Mujeres por la Paz. Ambos eventos proporcionaron un sentido de propósito y empoderamiento. El Día de la Paz de Sadako contó con poetas locales, música en directo, comunidad y amistad en la encantadora Casa De María, en las faldas de Montecito. En nuestro primer Almuerzo de Mujeres por la Paz, rendimos homenaje a dos mujeres increíbles: Cynthia Lazaroff, estimada miembro de la Junta, experta en las relaciones entre EE.UU. y Rusia y directora de documentales, y la senadora Monique Limón, que representa al Distrito 19 en el Senado del Estado de California y que ha defendido una legislación innovadora sobre armas nucleares en California.     En 2022 también volvieron las conferencias y reuniones presenciales a nivel internacional y estuvimos encantados de participar en numerosas actividades, como el Foro de la ICAN en Viena, la Conferencia sobre las Consecuencias Humanitarias de las Armas Nucleares, la Primera Reunión de los Estados Partes del Tratado sobre la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares, la 10ª Conferencia de Revisión del Tratado de No Proliferación Nuclear (TNP), el Día Internacional para la Eliminación Total de las Armas Nucleares y mucho más. Hicimos declaraciones, facilitamos la asistencia de muchos jóvenes líderes y dirigentes de comunidades afectadas, organizamos orientaciones para jóvenes y trabajamos con diplomáticos y colegas de ONG para reforzar y promover el Tratado sobre la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares. A principios de este mes, dos de nuestros becarios emitieron declaraciones en la Reunión de las Naciones Unidas sobre Seguridad de la Información y la Tecnología.     Uno de los momentos más destacados de este año fue comenzar en mi cargo como presidenta de la NAPF el 1 de agosto, que fue también el primer día de la 10ª Conferencia de Revisión del TNP (¡y el 21 cumpleaños de mi hija!). Otro momento destacado fue viajar a Estambul para asistir al Foro Internacional Política y Nuevos Paradigmas en el Siglo XXI, por invitación de los organizadores. Intervine en un panel centrado en las crisis humanitarias, que incluía el cambio climático, las crisis migratorias y la pérdida de biodiversidad, en el que hablé de las horribles consecuencias humanitarias tanto para los habitantes de las ciudades atacadas con armas nucleares como para todo el mundo. El último día del foro, me reuní con el presidente Erdogan y expuse ante los miembros del Parlamento turco los motivos por los que Turquía debería comprometerse con el desarme nuclear. Espero seguir consolidando esas relaciones y asociaciones.

En Santa Bárbara, tenemos previstas proyecciones de películas, entre ellas la de El voto de Hiroshima de Susan Strickler (el 10 de febrero, ¡estén atentos!), una conferencia Kelly en marzo, una Velada por la Paz en mayo, un programa de verano para institutos en julio y agosto, el Día de la Paz de Sadako en agosto y un almuerzo de Mujeres por la Paz en otoño. Virtualmente, celebraremos más actos sobre Peligros Nucleares e Invirtiendo la Tendencia. Hay nuevas iniciativas en marcha para la acción legislativa en nuestro estado de California y estamos explorando oportunidades de litigio a nivel nacional e internacional. Pero en el centro de nuestras actividades estará el Tratado sobre la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares. Este tratado es nuestra mejor esperanza para librar al mundo de las armas nucleares. No nos detendremos hasta que cumpla su promesa y se destruya hasta la última ojiva nuclear.

    Dear NAPF Family,

    2022 has been the year of renewal. Renewal of our fears of nuclear war, but also renewal of hope that we can indeed bring about a world free of nuclear weapons. At NAPF, renewal has meant new faces, new events, and new initiatives, albeit all with the same fervor and devotion to nuclear abolition that guided David Krieger and Frank Kelly in founding NAPF 40 years ago.

    When the Ukraine War started back in February, we rapidly put together a new initiative that included a series of virtual events, entitled Nuclear Dangers (in Ukraine). We have been fortunate to welcome to these events former Governor Jerry Brown, John Burroughs, Jackie Cabasso, Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg, Richard Falk, Martin Hellman, Cynthia Lazaroff, Andrew Lichterman, and Benoît Pelopidas, all of whom are leading thinkers, activists, academics, politicians, and more. All of the information about the events, including the recordings, is available HERE. In addition to the series, we also wrote a Declaration of Concern, which you can read and sign HERE. We are excited to continue to bring to you the foremost thinkers on nuclear disarmament issues from the US and abroad in 2023 and to continue to raise awareness of the dangers that these horrendous weapons and their potential use would bring to humanity and all life on Earth.

    2022 saw Reverse the Trend – Save Our Planet, Save Our People (RTT) officially becoming a youth initiative of NAPF, giving us new opportunities to engage with youth around the globe. Kudos to our Policy and Advocacy Coordinator Christian Ciobanu, for all that he does to make RTT such a vibrant initiative. We have held many events this year with a focus on youth and communities affected by nuclear weapons, some of which you can see HERE, HERE, and HERE. Numerous interns have put their energy and focus into learning about and engaging with these issues and we are thrilled to have their involvement.

    We were excited to return in 2022 to in-person programming at our home in Santa Barbara, including for the 29th Annual Sadako Peace Day and our First Annual Women Waging Peace Luncheon. Both events provided a sense of purpose and empowerment. Sadako Peace Day featured local poets, live music, community, and friendship at the lovely Casa De Maria in the Montecito foothills. At our very first Women Waging Peace Luncheon, we honored two incredible women: Cynthia Lazaroff, an esteemed Board member, an expert on US-Russia relations, and a documentary filmmaker, and Senator Monique Limón, who represents the 19th District in the California State Senate and who has championed groundbreaking legislation on nuclear weapons in California.     2022 also saw a return of in-person conferences and meetings at the international level and we were thrilled to participate in numerous activities, including the ICAN Forum in Vienna, the Conference on the Humanitarian Consequences of Nuclear Weapons, the First Meeting of States Parties of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the 10th Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, the International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, and more. We made statements, enabled the attendance of many young people and leaders from affected communities, organized youth orientations, and worked with diplomats and NGO colleagues to strengthen and promote the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Earlier this month, two of our interns delivered statements at the United Nations Meeting on Information and Technology Security.     One of the highlights of my year was starting in my position as President of NAPF on August 1, which was also the first day of the 10th NPT Review Conference (and my daughter’s 21st birthday!). Another highlight was traveling to Istanbul for the Politics and New Paradigms in the 21st Century International Forum, at the invitation of the organizers. I spoke on a panel that focused on humanitarian crises, including on climate change, migration crises, and biodiversity loss, where I addressed the horrible humanitarian consequences both for people in cities attacked by nuclear weapons and also for everyone around the world. On the last day of the forum, I met President Erdogan and made a case in front of members of the Turkish Parliament for why Turkey should engage with nuclear disarmament. I look forward to continuing to build on those relationships and partnerships.

    Our 2023 calendar is quickly filling up. In Santa Barbara, we are planning film screenings, including of the Vow from Hiroshima by Susan Strickland (on February 10, stay tuned!), a Kelly Lecture in March, Evening for Peace in May, a summer high school program in July and August, Sadako Peace Day in August, and Women Waging Peace Luncheon in the fall. Virtually, we will hold more Nuclear Dangers and Reverse the Trend events. New initiatives are underway for legislative action in our home state of California and we are exploring litigation opportunities nationally and internationally. But at the heart of our activities will be the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This treaty is our best hope to rid the world of nuclear weapons. We will not stop until it fulfills its promise and every last nuclear warhead is destroyed.

    This week, the Open-Ended Working Group on Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) has been meeting to discuss critical issues on security and use of (ICTs). These meetings are part of an agenda set out in 2021 and aimed at putting security and ICT issues at the forefront of international discussions and agreements.     We are very proud that two of our current interns, Joey Holzman, who is a student at Drew University, and Annamaria Belevitch, who is a student at Columbia University, contributed statements for this meeting on behalf of NAPF. Joey delivered his statement in person on Tuesday, December 6 and Annamaria delivered her statement on Wednesday, December 7. Joey’s statement focuses on the importance of including young people in ICT and security conversations, whereas Annamaria’s statement focuses on the relevance of international law to these discussions.

    Martin E. Hellman, Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, is best known for his invention, with Diffie and Merkle, of public key cryptography, the technology that, among other uses, enables secure Internet transactions. He is currentlly focused on Rethinking National Security. Prof. Hellman is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the recipient of the ACM Turing Award, often called “the Nobel Prize of Computer Science.”

    Professor Benoît Pélopidas is the founding director of the Nuclear Knowledges program at Sciences Po (CERI) in Paris. He is also an affiliate of the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) at Stanford University. Prof. Pélopidas focuses on the institutional, conceptual, imaginal and memorial underpinnings of nuclear weapons. He has engaged with influencers from all over the world to reconnect democracy, intergenerational justice, and nuclear policy.

    On October 11th, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), its youth initiative Reverse The Trend (RTT), Soka Gakkai International (SGI), and the Mission of Kiribati co-sponsored a hybrid event entitled Humanitarian Disarmament Education.  Speakers were: H.E. Ambassador Tito, the Permanent Representative of Kiribati to the UN; Mr. Aziz Azril; the Deputy Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the UN; Anna Ikeda; Program Coordinator for Disarmament, Office for UN Affairs, Soka Gakkai International; Christian N. Ciobanu, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator, NAPF and Co-Founder, Reverse The Trend: Save Our People, Save Our Planet; Jeremiah Williams, a student at Pace University; Alicia Sanders-Zakre, Policy and Research Coordinator, ICAN; and Mary Dickson, Nevada Test Site Downwinder. Dr. Ivana Hughes, President of NAPF chaired the meeting. A sizeable audience of college students was in attendance.

    In her opening remarks, Dr. Ivana Hughes of NAPF stressed the imperative of nuclear disarmament education as a powerful tool to help achieve a just and peaceful world. Dr. Hughes emphasized that nuclear destruction did not simply end with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but its legacy from decades of testing and development is prevalent in many parts of the globe such as the American Southwest, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, French Polynesia, and Kazakhstan. Dr. Hughes reminded the audience that we all continue to be the victims of nuclear terror with the normalization of discourse around nuclear weapons use.

    H.E. Ambassador Teburoro Tito of Kiribati stressed that the damage caused by nuclear weapons testing is still present and impacting affected communities in his country. H.E. Ambassador Tito specifically addressed the youth in attendance, encouraging them to continue their disarmament education and help in the global effort to eliminate WMDs. Finally, he described the struggle for nuclear disarmament to “the greatest love story to save mankind.”

    Mr. Aziz Azril of Malaysia discussed the TPNW, the rhetoric associated with nuclear weapons doctrines and the dangerous normalization of these weapons. Mr. Azril began his discussion on the universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Specifically, he discussed the need for states parties to advocate for the TPNW and shift the rhetoric associated with nuclear weapons. He further explained that the nuclear weapon states should change their current “moral rhetoric” about their nuclear weapons. 

     The representative further underscored how student activism can lead to nuclear disarmament. For example, a grassroots movement sparked the nuclear disarmament movement in Apartheid South Africa, which further led to both the end of apartheid and to South Africa’s Post-Apartheid government renouncing its nuclear weapons program.   

    Anna Ikeda of SGI explained that disarmament education can push the needle forward. In this connection, Ikeda mentioned that the creation of the TPNW can be seen as an educational journey. Ikeda stressed that our shared humanity is the focal point of nuclear disarmament education and campaigning. With the rise of militarism and racism globally, the quality of education was also emphasized, pushing the value and need for an intersectional education encompassing diversity and self-reflection.

    Mr. Christian Ciobanu of NAPF and RTT stressed the importance of youth advocacy as the vehicle of current and future change in nuclear disarmament. RTT works globally by collaborating with frontline communities on the twin existential threats of climate change and nuclear weapons. RTT encourages youth activists to raise awareness about the TPNW. Ciobanu emphasized the need for multipronged approaches to nuclear disarmament education. He discussed RTT’s widespread campaigns through curricula, filmmaking, toolkits, and mediums like poetry and art. He further highlighted RTT’s new journal that contains submissions from international youth on nuclear disarmament and environmental justice. 

    Jeremiah Williams of Pace University spoke of his personal journey to involvement with the existential issue of nuclear proliferation and its disarmament. He shared his reflections about the overwhelming lack of youth presence and diversity in the discussions of the issues. Williams made an appeal to the youth in audience to propagate nuclear disarmament as a crucial vehicle for change. He stressed that the inclusion of young people is essential, and that they have a right to determine their own future and influence policy of the future they will be living in.

    Alicia Sanders-Zakre of ICAN presented ICAN’s new university study on Schools of Mass Destruction. As explained by Sanders-Zakre, numerous universities are involved in supporting the U.S Nuclear Weapons Complex, aiding their design, research, engineering, and normalization of nuclear weapons. Instead, she proposes that the universities and students put their efforts towards nuclear disarmament advocacy and education. Sanders-Zakre called out the U.S. refusal to sign the TPNW and said that the treaty must bring about a new order of global peace.

    Mary Dickinson, a downwinder of U.S. nuclear weapons testing, gave a heart wrenching and harrowing speech on her personal account of the terror and danger of nuclear weapons and their testing. She called herself and others affected by nuclear weapons testing soldiers of the Cold War. Dickinson spoke of the gruesome and existential danger that nuclear weapons have wrought, and looms over us in this very moment. She explained that the downwinders and their descendants are disappointed by the lack of the accountability and refusal by the U.S to provide adequate compensation.  Dickinson highlighted the deeply tragic danger that nuclear weapons pose to all humanity, and that we should never forget what is being fought for when advocating for a peaceful nuclear weapons-free world.

    This event served as a pertinent reminder of the aims of disarmament education, and the vital need for it in a global system, which has normalized the existence of nuclear weapons and their proliferation.
