    Remembering my long, close, cherished friendship reinforces my sense of loss resulting from the death of David Krieger.

    Our primary interests were unusually congruent. We were devoted to a world in which nuclear weapons and the danger of a nuclear war had become an unpleasant recollection rather than an existential menace. We both found great satisfaction as well as a sense of personal liberation playing competitive tennis as often as our schedules would allow. And we both expressed our deepest feelings about the world through poetry, both reading and writing poems.

    David excelled in each of these spheres while I struggled, but despite this hierarchy of relative achievements, we managed to find pleasure through sharing much that seemed happily uncorrupted by the pressures of normal professional life.

    David was well-known in Santa Barbara. He was the founding president of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation in 1982 until his reluctant retirement in 2020. He managed to sustain this nongovernmental organization (NGO) through the support from an array of donors, many drawn from local sources. He put together a Board of Directors and staff that shared his single-minded dedication to the abolition of nuclear weapons, which for him was the darkest cloud overhanging the future of humanity.

    David firmly believed that reliable knowledge conveying the drastic havoc of a nuclear war would awaken both the citizenry and its governmental representatives to the menace that threatened the future, ever since the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The spirit of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation was well captured by its website adages: “For the human race, Not the arms race” and “Abolish nuclear weapons before they abolish us.”

    David never lost his hope for such a peaceful future for the country and the world, despite his deep knowledge how deeply embedded nuclearism was in the political and economic consciousness of the nation, through the arms industry, a subservient Congress and media, and militarist foreign policy.

    In lectures of invited peace luminaries and awards for life achievements, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation honored those who contributed to realizing its goals, including Daniel Ellsberg, Noam Chomsky, and Robert Jay Lifton, celebrated activists such as Nobel Laureate Mairead Maguire and Helen Caldicott, and notable personalities such as Queen Noor and Oliver Stone.

    For such prolonged anti-nuclear efforts, it is hardly surprising that David and the Peace Foundation were nominated on several occasions for the Nobel Peace Prize. In the recent book, The Real Nobel Peace Prize: A Squandered Opportunity to Abolish War, the renowned Norwegian expert on this most coveted of peace prizes, Fredrik Heffermehl, writes convincingly that David deserved the prize more than many of its recipients because his life’s work and that of the foundation he created. Heffermehl believed that the foundation’s contributions were in keeping with what Alfred Nobel had in mind when he established the prize to realize a vision of a world without war. David’s focus on nuclear weaponry was the vital first step in achieving this goal.

    If nuclearism was what David hated, what he loved, besides his family, was poetry. It was a great joy for me to exchange haiku with David on a regular basis. Here are two examples of his haiku that should be read in relation to the profound impact the Hiroshima experience had on David’s life:

    There, in the dark sky
    through the sycamore leaves
    the full moon

    A rare good fortune —
    to awaken from dreaming
    in the moonlight

    Although disease made him unable to speak, David remained alert until the end of his life, undoubtedly mourning the terrible wars in Ukraine and Gaza, but I also imagine him glimpsing glimmers of light, none brighter than knowing that the foundation his life was built around would continue to thrive under the sway of its inspirational new president, Ivana Hughes. She shares David’s passion, exhibiting a nurturing energy far and wide that spreads the message of nuclear disarmament, effectively introducing the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation abolitionist perspective into the practical activities of the United Nations and many other global venues around the world.

    A second glimmer of light is the entry into force of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2021. Although the treaty is opposed by NATO countries, including of course the United States, as well as by the other eight nuclear states, it is supported by governments representing a majority of the world’s peoples. David never lost his faith in respect for international law as the pathway to a peaceful world. This new treaty gives peace activists a powerful instrument by which to work toward a denuclearizing world, but it will not happen without a robust worldwide movement of people. That alone, with the capacities to mobilize sufficient democratic pressures, will lead governments — above all, ours — to finally do the right thing.

    Above all, David believed in the transforming potential of love and beauty. His life was memorable for more than being a warrior for nuclear abolition. He was blessed by the love and the extraordinary support of his life partner, Carolee; children who made him proud; and grandchildren who kept him young as he grew old. It was Carolee who was so steadfast in her loving vigil of recent years as to make David’s transition from life to death as bearable, even mostly joyful, as it appeared to be.

    En un mundo en el que la violencia y la crueldad de la guerra están aumentando en muchas partes de nuestro sufrido planeta, el Dr. David Krieger, Cofundador y presidente Emérito de la Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), falleció el pasado jueves 7 de diciembre en su casa de Santa Bárbara, California, con su querida familia a su lado

    No es fácil resumir en unos párrafos su larga y positiva vida de acción pacifista en favor de la eliminación de las armas nucleares. Le recuerdo con gran afecto en una sincera amistad de más de 35 años. Hablé con él hace sólo unas semanas y su voz estaba fatigada, cansada por la enfermedad que le aquejaba. Pero su mensaje era firme, que debemos redoblar nuestros esfuerzos para evitar la catástrofe nuclear que sería el fin de la humanidad.     Gracias a él, en junio de 1989 tuve la oportunidad muy especial de conocer y conversar con el capitán Jacques-Yves Cousteau, mientras recibía el Premio al Líder de la Paz de la NAPF. De aquel encuentro surgió la invitación de Cousteau a “unirme a su familia”, cosa que hice casi de inmediato, y mi vida tomó un nuevo rumbo. David me pidió que me uniera también a NAPF, y fue otro gran honor cuando me nombró director para América Latina, y durante su dirección representé a la organización en innumerables acciones, conferencias, charlas, todas ellas centradas en transmiEr el mensaje de la paz y la urgencia de que todos los ciudadanos del mundo exijan el fin de las armas nucleares. Krieger era un hombre de pensamiento, convicción y honor. Quería un mundo más seguro, más pacífico y, en definitiva, más amable y justo para todos. Nunca dejó de creer que era posible. Era fácil y natural senErse atraído por su carisma, su honesEdad y sus profundos conocimientos sobre la paz y el desarme nuclear. David Krieger fue nominado 10 veces al Premio Nobel de la Paz. En 2017, la Campaña Internacional para la Abolición de las Armas Nucleares (ICAN) recibió el Premio Nobel de la Paz. NAPF se enorgullece de formar parte de esta campaña.

    David mantuvo una estrecha relación con América Latina. En una ocasión, me habló de su colaboración en los años sesenta con el embajador de México ante las Naciones Unidas, Alfonso García Robles, en la redacción del Tratado para la Proscripción de las Armas Nucleares en la América Latina y el Caribe, también conocido como Tratado de Tlatelolco.

    Este tratado prohibió la producción, almacenamiento o transporte de cualquier Epo de armas nucleares en América Latina y el Caribe. Este documento ha servido de ejemplo para otros acuerdos similares. García Robles recibió el Premio Nobel de la Paz en 1982. “Fue un hombre extraordinario que me ayudó mucho por su entusiasmo por la paz y el desarme de las amenazadoras armas de destrucción masiva”, me dijo una vez.

    David amaba y escribía poesía y lo hacía muy bien en el estilo japonés haiku. Un día me explicó que con este estilo de poesía le resultaba más fácil dejar volar su espíritu y expresar sus sentimientos sobre los acontecimientos mundiales y las cosas cotidianas. Tuve el gran placer de traducir varios de esos poemas al español, que se reprodujeron con gran éxito en los medios de comunicación latinos de Estados Unidos y América Latina. También admiraba mucho al poeta chileno Pablo Neruda.

    David fue uno de los principales impulsores de que Hiroshima y Nagasaki fueran recordadas cada año por la enorme tragedia de las ciudades destruidas por las bombas atómicas en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y de que no se permitera que volviera a ocurrir en ningún lugar. Alentó la asistencia a reuniones y conferencias de hibakushas, los supervivientes de aquel holocausto atómico, que relatan y comparten sus terribles experiencias.

    Esta Navidad echaré de menos la hermosa tarjeta que recibíamos todos los años en casa, de David y su querida familia.

    In a world where the violence and cruelty of war is increasing in many parts of our suffering planet, Dr. David Krieger, Co-Founder and President Emeritus of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), passed away last Thursday, December 7, at his home in Santa Barbara, California, with his loving family by his side.

    It is not easy to summarize in a few paragraphs his long and positive life of peace-oriented action for the elimination of nuclear weapons. I remember him with great affection in a sincere friendship of more than 35 years. I spoke with him only a few weeks ago and his voice was weary, tired from the disease that afflicted him. But his message was firm, that we must redouble our efforts to avoid the nuclear catastrophe that would be the end of humanity. I share with you these two messages I received from him in the middle of last month, the second of which is his comment on my article “The Children of War.”

    Thanks to him, in June 1989, I had the very special opportunity to meet and converse with Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau, while he was receiving the Peace Leader Award from NAPF. Out of that meeting came Cousteau’s invitation for me to “join his family,” which I did almost immediately, and my life took a new direction. David asked me to join NAPF as well, and that was another great honor when he appointed me Director for Latin America, and during his tenure I represented the organization in countless actions, conferences, lectures, all focused on conveying the message of peace and the urgency for all citizens of the world to demand an end to nuclear weapons. Krieger was a man of thought, conviction, and honor. He wanted to make the world safer, more peaceful, and ultimately, kinder and fairer for all. He never stopped believing that it was possible. It was easy and natural to be drawn to his charisma, his honesty, and his deep knowledge of peace and nuclear disarmament. David Krieger was nominated 10 times for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2017, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. NAPF is proud to be a part of this campaign.

    David maintained a close relationship with Latin America. On one occasion, he told me of his collaboration in the 1960s with Mexico’s ambassador to the United Nations, Alfonso García Robles, in the drafting of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, also known as the Treaty of Tlatelolco. This treaty prohibited the production, stockpiling or transport of any type of nuclear weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean. This document has served as an example for other similar agreements. García Robles received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982. “He was an extraordinary man who was very helpful to me because of his enthusiasm for peace and the disarmament of the menacing weapons of mass destruction.” he once told me.

    David loved and wrote poetry and did it very well in the Japanese haiku style. One day he explained to me that with this style of poetry he found it easier to let his spirit fly and express his feelings about world events and everyday things. I had the great pleasure of translating several of those poems into Spanish, which were reproduced with great success in the Latin media in the United States and Latin America. He also admired greatly the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

    David was one of the main advocates for Hiroshima and Nagasaki to be remembered every year for the enormous tragedy of the cities destroyed by the atomic bombs in World War II, and that it should never be allowed to happen again anywhere. He encouraged the attendance at meetings and conferences of hibakushas, the survivors of that atomic holocaust, who recount and share their terrible experiences.

    This Christmas I will miss the beautiful card we received every year at home, from David and his dear family.

    On the opening day of the 2nd Meeting of States Parties (2MSP) to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), Kiribati and Kazakhstan, in collaboration with the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, its youth initiative Reverse The Trend, Marshallese Educational Initiative, Hiroshima Prefecture, Rotarian Action Group for Peace, and The Prospect Hill Foundation  hosted a side event on the humanitarian provisions contained in Articles 6 and 7 of the TPNW. Speakers included: H.E. Ambassador Teburoro Tito of Kiribati; Mr. Arman Baissuanov, Director of the Department of International Security at Kazakhstan’s MFA; Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki of Hiroshima; Veronique Christory, Senior Arms Adviser of the ICRC Delegation, UN;  Bonnie Docherty,  Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic (IHRC) and Director of its Armed Conflict and Civilian Protection Initiative; Dr. Ivana Nikolic Hughes, President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a representative of the Scientific Advisory Group; and Benetick Kabua Maddison, Executive Director of the Marshallese Educational Initiative. 

    As the co-chairs of the intersessional working group on victim assistance, environmental remediation, international cooperation and assistance, Kiribati and Kazakhstan delivered the introductory remarks. Ambassador Tito of Kiribati presented the co-chairs’ working paper submitted to the 2MSP and advocated for the establishment of an international trust fund by the 3rd Meeting of States Parties.

    Building upon Ambassador Tito’s comments, Mr. Arman Baissuanov, Director of the Department of International Security at Kazakhstan’s MFA, explained that the working group will continue to address the feasibility of a voluntary trust fund and the possible guidelines it will follow. He further explained the fund would provide much needed aid to the survivors of nuclear tests.  

    Moreover, concerning environmental remediation, Baissuanov noted that the “past or present efforts to clean up former test sites have been woefully inadequate.” He lamented that former test sites still contain  dilapidated infrastructures, which pose ongoing environmental risks.

    Following the co-chairs’ presentations, Governor Yuzaki discussed Hiroshima Prefecture’s efforts in helping the survivors of the atomic bombing known as the hibakusha. Specifically, the Governor explained the evolution of Japan’s laws related to victim assistance, including the Act on Medical Care for Atomic Bomb Survivors (1957), the Act on Special Measures for Atomic Bomb Survivors (1968), Action No. 86, Directive No. 42 (Implementation of the Act for Partial Revision to the Act on Medical Care for Atomic Bomb Survivors and the Act on Special Measures for Atomic Bomb Survivors, 1974), The Act on Relief for Atomic Bomb Survivors (1995), Implementation of the Act on Relief for Atomic Bomb Survivors (Notice Hatsu-Ken-I No. 158 of 1995, given by the Vice Minister of Health and Welfare to the prefectural governors and the mayors of Hiroshima City and Nagasaki City), and Implementation of the Cabinet Order, etc. for Partial Revision to the Order for Enforcement of the Act on Relief for Atomic Bomb Survivors (Notice Ken-Hatsu No. 0301002 of 2003, issued by the Director-General of the Health Service Bureau of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to the prefectural governors and the mayors of Hiroshima City and Nagasaki City). 

    As part of his concluding remarks, the Governor explained the significance of Japan’s decision to support Kiribati and Kazakhstan’s resolution on addressing the legacy of nuclear weapons because it provides another opportunity for Japan to help assist the victims of nuclear testing. 

    Following the Governor’s presentation, Veronique Christory of the ICRC expressed strong support for the continuation of the working group’s mandate, including the establishment of a Trust Fund to provide financial compensation to the victims of the use and testing of nuclear weapons, and measures to remediate contaminated environments. Christory further noted the ICRC published a detailed briefing note with guidance on the interpretation of the provisions of Articles 6 and 7. Christory further stated that the ICRC warmly welcomed the adoption, by a large majority, including States not party to the TPNW, the UN First Committee Resolution on providing victim assistance and environmental remediation to states affected by the use or testing of nuclear weapons. 

    After the ICRC’s presentation, Bonnie Docherty of Harvard Law School addressed the reporting guidelines on victim assistance and environmental remediation contained in the co-chairs report, emphasizing their voluntary and non-burdensome nature. She noted that the format is designed to simplify the gathering, presentation, and analysis of relevant information. The format also includes a cover sheet that allows states parties to simply check a box if a certain part of the format is not applicable or their information is unchanged. Third, the guidelines and format draw heavily on existing humanitarian disarmament treaties, including the Landmine Ban Treaty and the Convention on Cluster Weapons. She concluded by urging the states parties to adopt the co-chairs’ proposed voluntary reporting guidelines and format at the 2MSP and recommend their use, albeit on a voluntary basis. 

    Dr. Ivana Nikolic Hughes of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and the Scientific Advisory Group of the TPNW elaborated upon the significance of Kiribati and Kazakhstan’s joint resolution. She explained that the vote was stunning, with 171 states voting in favor of the resolution. It demonstrated the impact the TPNW has on the norms and expectations for all states, even those which are not party to the treaty. 

    Speaking in her capacity as a representative of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG), Dr. Hughes provided a brief overview of its formation. She noted that the SAG is composed of 15 members who were nominated by several states, including Austria, Bangladesh, Ireland, Ivory Coast, Kazakhstan, Kiribati Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, and South Africa. The co-chairs are Dr. Zia Mian of Princeton University and Dr. Patricia Lewis of Chatham House. She mentioned that the first SAG meeting occurred on March 1, 2023,  the anniversary of Castle Bravo. Dr. Hughes also explained the SAG’s report to the 2MSP. Additionally, she highlighted the SAG’s interest in engaging with the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. She also explained that the SAG should analyze the effects of ionizing radiation on women and girls, assist with the implementation of Articles 6 and 7, as well as a study about the humanitarian and climatic impacts of a nuclear exchange between states. 

    To conclude the panel discussion, Benetick Kabua Maddison of the Marshallese Educational Initiative discussed the humanitarian and environmental impacts of the 67 US nuclear tests, which were conducted in the Marshall Islands. He shared the need for the international community to provide nuclear justice to the Marshallese community.

    Dr. David Krieger (27 Mar 1942 – 7 Dec 2023) was a nuclear disarmament advocate and a peace champion. He was a visionary. Not only a man of impeccable intellect, but also with the soul of an artist. He was a peace builder and lead co-founder of Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) established in 1982. The pioneering Nuclear weapons abolition monthly NAPF newsletter took one by surprise for its path-breaking non-partisan content put together by a group of scholar-activists. They stood up to criticize nuclear powers, mainly American polity for its double speak and inaction on nuclear weapons ban, their testing and proliferation.

    The annual NAPF distinguished peace leadership honorees award established in 1984, its recipients took the award as a badge of honor for recognition of their courageous nonviolent peace work. A list of recipients includes independent thinkers and activists from all walks of life: Naom Chomsky, Setsuko Thurlow, Helen Caldicott, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Yehudi Menuhin, Jonathan Schell, Jody Williams, Carl Sagan, Daniel Ellsberg, Paul Ehrlich, Rev. James Lawson… around 40 such honorees since 1984 received the eminent leadership distinction. (Professor Glenn D. Paige, founder of the Center for Global Nonkilling was one of the recipients of the award in 2010.)

    David Krieger’s deeply felt books of poetry emanated from his nonkilling convictions and compassion. His poems for the Letter from USA were not a lament or vent but their No More Killing sentiments were cri de coeur seeking ways to respond to the human tragedy produced by chauvinistic militarism, human apathy and consumerism. His poems wanted us to know– whether a just and peaceful world without nuclear weapons is possible? As he wrote: “The shadow of the bomb still darkens the forests of our dreams.” The titles of his poetry collections speak for themselves:

    The NAPF website (wagingpeace.org) shows under David Krieger’s leadership numerous awareness campaigns that raised critical issues stopping nuclear disarmament in and outside USA.

    In 2019 after four decades Dr. Krieger stepped down as the President of NAPF passing on the ‘waging peace’ baton to Dr. Ivana N. Hughes.

    David Krieger, Ph.D. was Founder and President Emeritus of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, and a member of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment. Amongst several of his wide-spanning leadership endeavors in global peacebuilding, he was a founder and a member of the Global Council of Abolition 2000, councilor on the World Future Council, and the chair of the Executive Committee of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility. He had a BA in Psychology and an MA and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from the University of Hawaii as well as a J.D. from the Santa Barbara College of Law; he served for 20 years as a judge pro tem for the Santa Barbara Municipal and Superior Courts. Dr. Krieger was the author of many books and studies of peace in the Nuclear Age. He has written or edited more than 20 books and hundreds of articles and book chapters.     David Malcom Krieger, hombre de paz, falleció el 7 de diciembre de 2023 y el mundo se ha quedado sin un campeón menos.

    David nació en Los Ángeles, California el 27 de marzo de 1942, hijo de Herbert y Sybil Krieger, el primer médico pediatra del Valle de San Fernando.

    Estudió en el instituto North Hollywood High antes de ir al Occidental College, donde se licenció en Psicología. Poco antes de obtener su doctorado en Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad de Hawái conoció y se casó con Carolee, su esposa desde hace 57 años.

    Viajó a Japón para hacer estudios como parte de su trabajo de doctorado y quedó tan conmovido por lo que vio y vivió y en Hiroshima y Nagasaki que dedicó el resto de su vida en la lucha por abolir las armas nucleares y lograr la paz. Casi al mismo tiempo fue reclutado por el ejército durante la guerra de Vietnam. Sin embargo, su espíritu de paz y su sentido moral no le permitían participar en una guerra para matar. Fue, hasta donde sabemos, el primer oficial de la guerra de Vietnam que solicitó el estatus de Objetor de Conciencia.

    En 1972, David llegó a Santa Bárbara para trabajar como ayudante de Elisabeth Mann Borgese en el Centro para el Estudio de las Instituciones Democráticas.     David Malcom Krieger, man of peace, passed away on December 7, 2023 and left the world with one less champion.

    David was born on March 27, 1942 to Herbert and Sybil Krieger in Los Angeles. The family settled in the San Fernando Valley where his father was the first pediatrician. David attended North Hollywood High before heading to Occidental College where he graduated with a degree in Psychology. He was getting his PhD in Political Science from the University of Hawaii when he met and married Carolee, his wife of 57 years. He did get the PhD, too.

    David traveled to Japan to study as part of his PhD work and was so moved by what he experienced and learned in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that he dedicated the rest of his life to abolishing nuclear weapons and achieving peace. He was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War almost simultaneously. However, his clarity of mind and morals would not allow for participating in war and killing. He was, as far as we know, the first Officer in the Vietnam War to sue for Conscientious Objector status.

    In 1972, David came to Santa Barbara to work as an assistant to Elisabeth Mann Borgese at the Center for The Study of Democratic Institutions. Here he collaborated with some of the greatest minds of the time on the subject of democracy. He and Carolee stayed in Santa Barbara, raising their three children among the blood orange trees and peacocks on the property they worked tirelessly to convert from rocks and weeds to the artists’ and gardeners’ paradise that it is now.

    In 1982, David, Frank Kelly, Wally Drew, and two others founded the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. This was to be David’s proudest accomplishment. David Krieger led the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation until his retirement in 2019. His work, educating, advocating, writing extensively, and speaking all over the world about the dangers of the nuclear age and the insanity of the nuclear arms race helped advance the cause of peace with justice, particularly among young people, however, also with nearly everyone he personally encountered. David’s charisma, honesty, and depth of knowledge on the subject were hard to disagree with. David Krieger was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize ten separate years.

    David developed a passion for karate when he was in Japan in his early 20s. As with everything he was passionate about, he dedicated himself to being among the best at it, earning his black belt in the Shito-Ryu form, and founding and running his own Dojo, Pacific Karate-Do Institute. He taught many Santa Barbarians karate in the 1970s and 1980s, and counted some of those former students among his closest friends.

    David loved to play tennis and for years, his free afternoons and weekend mornings were spent playing with some of his other closest friends.

    David was also a prolific poet. He found poetry to be an excellent way to express his impression of world events and daily joys.

    David Krieger was a man of thought, of conviction, and of honor. He wanted to make the world safer, more peaceful, and ultimately a kinder and more just place for everyone and everything. He never stopped believing it was possible. In his honor, we admonish you to carry this work on.

    The Second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) concluded at the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ) in New York on Friday, December 1. Over the course of one week, states parties to the treaty, as well as observing states, a vibrant and engaged civil society – including members of affected communities and scores of youth advocates – all participated in the superb plenary sessions, 65 events, and countless formal and informal discussions.     The meeting represents an exciting milestone in a quest for a world free of nuclear weapons. Under the able leadership of President Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramirez of Mexico, the meeting produced a declaration entitled, Our Commitment to Upholding the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and Averting Their Catastrophic Consequences. The declaration brilliantly outlines the many reasons why elimination of nuclear weapons is an existential imperative for humanity, the progress made thus far, and the steps remaining on this critical path.     At this meeting, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations, Akan Rakhmatullin, was elected as President of the Third Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW (3MSP), which will take place at the UNHQ in New York, March 3-7, 2025. Also at this meeting, the Republic of Kiribati and the Republic of Kazakhstan were elected to serve as the Co-Coordinators of the Informal Working Group on Articles 6 and 7 (on victim assistance and environmental remediation).     The Second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons began on Monday, November 27, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is in attendance, including our President Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator, Christian Ciobanu, Communications Coordinator, Kenneth Chiu, and Board Member, Cynthia Lazaroff, alongside a large team of our interns and youth activists.     Honorable President and Secretary General, Distinguished Delegates, and colleagues and friends from civil society and beyond, 

    We are gathered today in what is surely a bright light amidst the darkness of death and devastation that has become the hallmark of our world today. When peace is elusive in multiple locations around the globe, and we watch the suffering of civilians on our screens in real time, it is easy to feel helpless and to lose hope that a fair and just world is possible. And yet, the Second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons exemplifies precisely that – cooperation of nations from all around the planet, standing together for a better future, one that is free of nuclear weapons. 

    The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation has shared such a vision for 41 years this month and applauds this body for forging the path ahead. The Foundation never lost sight of the fact that nuclear weapons abolition is an existential imperative for humanity. Today, the nearly 13,000 nuclear weapons could not only kill millions, but also have the potential to end human civilization as we know it and extinguish life on our beautiful planet. To have a treaty that can lead to the elimination of these weapons is a dream come true for us and for peoples of the world.  

    We commend you on your vision and fortitude in the face of naysayers and detractors. And we commend your attention not only to those who could suffer due to nuclear weapons in the future, but those that have suffered from nuclear weapons use, testing, and related activities in the past and who continue to suffer today. Nothing we do will erase the terrible realities that victims have faced due to these terrible weapons. But it is possible to assist them in meaningful ways, including by conducting full and comprehensive assessment and remediation of contaminated environments. The TPNW can accomplish this critical task. 

     As a mother and a scientist, I am keenly focused on leaving a world free of nuclear weapons to my children and the generations of scientists that will come after me. I am also a teacher and a mentor to young people at Columbia University and at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and our youth initiative Reverse the Trend. What I know and witness every day is that young people of the world have talents, dreams, and hopes. One of them – Anastasia Shakhidzhanova is here with me today and will take a moment to tell you about her own experience learning about nuclear weapons and what their elimination means to her.  

     Let us not forestall the chance of today’s children and future generations to live out their full lives by continuing to play nuclear roulette. Let us eliminate nuclear weapons before they eliminate us. Thank you for blazing the trail.

    Good afternoon honorable President and Secretary General, distinguished delegates, and members of civil society. It is a great privilege to speak before you today.  

    Last spring, I traveled with other young people from around the world to Hiroshima and Nagasaki as part of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and its youth initiative Reverse the Trend. We attended the ICAN Youth Forum and met with survivors of both the atomic bombings and the over 2,000 nuclear tests conducted globally. The trip was deeply meaningful and educational. I am still shocked at how little the general public, and especially my own generation, knows about these nuclear legacies, including acute and long-term illnesses, family separations, forced relocations, poisonings of soil, air, and water, and more. 

     For decades, mothers around the world, including in Algeria, Kiribati, and Kazakhstan, my family’s home, have been contending with horrific birth defects, widespread infertility, and developmental problems in their children. Many who are dealing with these issues today were not even alive when nuclear weapons were exploded in their homelands. These mothers and other victims require help from the international community. They require justice. 

     I am a fourth-year student studying political science and sustainable development at Columbia University. Despite being at Columbia and Science Po in France for over three years, my extensive university coursework never included this history, nor did it discuss the present role of nuclear weapons in geopolitics. How is it possible that something that has been devastating to so many is barely mentioned? How is it possible that something that has the potential to end humanity is swept under the rug so effectively? 

     Today, we have nearly 13,000 weapons, among which are bombs that are hundreds of times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Using just one third of the arsenals of Russia and US alone could cause the most devastating climate change the world has ever seen – nuclear winter. Given these realities, it is morally, intellectually, and politically inexcusable to consign the constantly present risk of nuclear weapons use, whether intentional or accidental, and nuclear war to a subtle hum in the background of our minds. 

    Nuclear weapons, their proliferation, and their constant technological advancement is not an inescapable reality humanity must silently contend with. While the challenges of nuclear disarmament are high, just like for any other geopolitical challenge, what’s needed is clear: more diplomacy, more negotiations, more human to human conversation. I am grateful that you are doing just that, right here, right now. 

    The looming threat of complete human and ecosystem obliteration is not a possibility the world has always lived with, and we cannot passively accept it as an inevitable reality any longer. Thank you on behalf of my generation for working towards a day when these barbaric weapons of mass death will be eliminated from our beautiful planet.

    The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation mourns the passing of Daisaku Ikeda, Budhist philosopher and President of Soka Gakkai International and Honorary President of Soka Gakkai. Ikeda passed away on November 15, 2023 in Tokyo. He was 95 years old.

    Ikeda lived a long and meaningful life, using his early experience with war as a motivating factor in pursuing peace through citizen diplomacy. Over many decades, he met some of the world’s foremost leaders, including Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Linus Pauling, and Joseph Rotblatt. He was the recipient of numerous awards all around the world and a prolific author of dozens of books on topics ranging from peace, disarmament, art, culture, education, philosophy, and more.

    Ikeda was a cherished friend to our President Emeritus, David Krieger. Krieger had this to say about Ikeda: “Daisaku Ikeda was a force of nature and a fount of creativity.  He built educational institutions, including two universities.  He was also a poet, philosopher and photographer – a true renaissance man.  Our dialogue, which was published as a book, Choose Hope, was a highlight of my work on abolishing nuclear weapons.”
