The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation honors the life and legacy of Robert Jay Lifton, longtime member of its Advisory Council, who died September 4, 2025 at age 99. A psychiatrist, historian, and influential public intellectual, his early work with Hiroshima survivors helped bring global attention to the human consequences of nuclear war and shaped decades of nuclear-age scholarship.
Lifton delivered the Foundation’s 2005 Frank K. Kelly Lecture on Humanity’s Future at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In that lecture, America and the Human Future: Surviving Vietnam, 9/11, and Iraq, he argued that how societies interpret catastrophe and survival helps shape the future they create, and that confronting danger honestly must remain connected to the possibility of hope.
Across a long career, Lifton examined mass violence, thought reform, war trauma, and what he called the “nuclear age mentality,” consistently warning about the psychological normalization of existential risk. His research, writing, and public engagement helped ground nuclear disarmament advocacy in human experience, moral responsibility, and psychological consequence. His work continues to inform efforts to confront nuclear risks and advance a more humane global future.
