NAPF Honors Global Peacemakers on International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

Santa Barbara, CA – September 12, 2024 – The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) will mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on September 26, 2024, with events celebrating key figures in global peace efforts.

On September 26, NAPF will host the Women Waging Peace Luncheon at the Kimpton Canary Hotel Rooftop, honoring:

  • Patricia Ellsberg will be awarded the inaugural Daniel Ellsberg Lifetime Achievement Award for her activism, including her role in releasing the Pentagon Papers.
  • Ambassador Elayne Whyte will receive the Women Waging Peace Award for her leadership as President of the United Nations Conference that negotiated and adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
  • Véronique Christory, of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), will receive the Women Waging Peace Award for her contributions to disarmament and international humanitarian law.

On September 27, NAPF will present Talking About the Fire, a play by Chris Thorpe at Old Mission Santa Barbara, exploring nuclear disarmament. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session.

Patricia Ellsberg stated, “I’m honored to receive an award from NAPF in the company of such extraordinary women.”

Ambassador Elayne Whyte shares, “I am truly honored to receive the Women Waging Peace Award 2024. It is also a privilege to share this space with those who have tirelessly worked to build a world free from the existential threat of nuclear weapons. Our commitment continues now more than ever!”

Véronique Christory states, “The existence of nuclear weapons poses some of the most profound questions about the extent of human suffering we are willing to inflict, or to permit in war. We decided to make the impossible possible and negotiated the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Nuclear weapons have always been immoral, now they are illegal. It’s a beacon of hope for humanity.”

About Talking About the Fire, Christory states, “A brilliant show which encourages us to be part of the urgent conversation and action for the sake of present and future generations. A show full of hope and humanity.”

Chris Thorpe, who wrote and performs Talking About the Fire, states, “I can’t wait to bring Talking About The Fire to the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. It’s a privilege to visit one of the organizations and some of the people who were pivotal in helping the show exist, and to be a small part of such an important celebration. The aim of the show is to give ordinary people – myself included – agency to talk about the fact these weapons aren’t normal, by having a communal conversation through theatre. I’m so excited to share the work in Santa Barbara.”

NAPF President, Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes, states, “The contributions that Elayne, Patricia, and Veronique have made to a more peaceful world, one free of nuclear weapons, are unique and profound. They should inspire all of us to strive to wage peace in our own ways and ensure a bright future for our children, grandchildren, and all generations yet to come. We are particularly thrilled to recognize Patricia with our Lifetime Achievement Award, which NAPF has renamed the Daniel Ellsberg Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of her late husband, the legendary peace activist and public intellectual, Daniel Ellsberg.”

About Talking About the Fire, Hughes states, “We are excited to bring Talking About the Fire to Santa Barbara and engage our community in artistic expression and meaningful dialogue about nuclear disarmament.”

Director of Policy and Advocacy and RTT Coordinator, Christian Ciobanu, states, “We are excited to bring Talking about the Fire to Santa Barbara as it is crucial to showcase the power of art as a form of activism and highlight how artists can help abolish nuclear weapons. Santa Barbara has always been known as a haven for artists and writers and anyone who is passionate about the arts and social justice. It is our hope that this play will motivate and inspire artists based in Santa Barbara to work with us towards establishing a world free of nuclear weapons.
