On Thursday, March 6, 2025, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation; its youth initiative, Reverse The Trend; the Simons Foundation Canada; Kiribati, and Mexico, the gender focal point for the TPNW convened a special event on nuclear weapons and gender. The speakers included: Oemwa Johnson, a youth delegate of Kiribati; Ms. Sylvia Paola Mendoza, Economic and Social Affairs Coordinator of Mexico; Dr. Jennifer Simons, President and Founder of the Simons Foundation Canada; Dr. Ivana Nikolic Hughes, the President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation; Rooj Ali, youth coordinator for RTT Canada; and Senator Marilou Mcphedran of Manitoba. Stella Dean Rose, a former NAPF intern and RTT youth advisor, moderated the session.
Dr. Jennifer Simons, Founder and President of the Simons Foundation Canada, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the disproportionate impact nuclear radiation has on women and children. She spoke about the higher risks women face, including the development of cancers, stillbirths, and higher suicide rates due to radiation exposure. Dr. Simons also cited the Baby Tooth Project of the 1950s and 1960s, led by women in St. Louis, Missouri, who uncovered high levels of strontium-90 in children’s teeth.
Expanding upon Dr. Simons’ remarks, Dr. Ivana Hughes of NAPF underscored the disproportionate impacts nuclear violence has on women and young people. She stressed that children are more vulnerable to developing cancers and other health issues caused by radiation exposure than adults.
Oemwa Johnson of Kiribati explained that “the radioactive fallout from these tests did not simply dissipate; it has poisoned the land, the ocean, and the very bodies of the people who inhabit these areas. Women, in particular, have suffered extensively; many have experienced miscarriages, birth defects in their children, and long-term reproductive health challenges. The silent toll on maternal health and family structures remains a dark and underreported consequence of nuclear colonialism.”
Following Johnson’s remarks, Mendoza of Mexico discussed the significance of Mexico’s role as the gender focal point and its role within the Commission on the Status of Women. She further mentioned that the international community should embrace feminist frameworks to help develop social development mechanisms.
On behalf of RTT Canada, Rooj Ali stated that “the willingness to use nuclear weapons is the willingness to dehumanize groups of people.” Ali called for a challenge to the concept of gender itself as a system of power and a mechanism of colonial control.” She further contended that in order to understand the intimate connections between nuclear violence and gender-based violence, we must question the entrenched systems of power.
Finally, Senator McPhedran of Manitoba addressed how women and children, in particular, experience the compounded and intersectional impact of nuclear radiation. Despite these challenges, Senator McPhedran praised women for consistently leading anti-nuclear advocacy, demonstrating resilience.
