On March 6, 2025, the the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF), its youth initiative, Reverse the Trend (RTT), NYU’s International Relations Society, Japanese Cultural Association, and Latinos Unidos Con Honor y Amistad co-organized an event at New York University titled “Examining the Relationship Between the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons and the TPNW.” The event brought together diplomats, hibakusha, youth activists, and civil society leaders to explore the human cost of nuclear weapons and the transformative potential of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Yulianna Acuña, an NYU student and member of our delegation, moderated the event.
The program began with a powerful opening from the President of NYU’s Japanese Cultural Association, who reminded the audience of their shared humanity through a simple and resonant line: “I am human. I am human. We are all human.” Christian Ciobanu, Director of Policy and Advocacy at NAPF and Project Coordinator for RTT, followed by reflecting on the growth of youth-led disarmament efforts. Director General Arman Baissuanov of Kazakhstan closed the opening session by emphasizing the need for a global security framework that prioritizes people and peace, not weapons and power.
In the high-level segment, H.E. Ambassador Elayne Whyte of Costa Rica spoke of her identity as a “citizen of the world” and described the TPNW as a process deeply shaped by empathy and moral responsibility. She highlighted the essential role that women in her generation have played in reframing disarmament through a humanitarian lens and criticized how nuclear discourse has traditionally ignored the safety of both people and the planet. H.E. Ambassador Alexander Kmentt of Austria offered reflections on the TPNW’s progress since the First Meeting of States Parties (1MSP). He praised the treaty’s existence as a sign of hope and a shift from mass destruction toward a more inclusive security paradigm. He applauded civil society’s role in sustaining momentum, but he noted that the treaty’s universalization still needs to accelerate.
Testimonies from affected communities were the emotional core of the event. Masako Wada, Assistant Secretary-General of Nihon Hidankyo, winner of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, explained the se long silencing of hibakusha voices and the immense suffering endured by survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She referenced a chilling remark once made by a U.S. official: “People who were supposed to die, died.” Yayoi Tsuchida, Assistant Secretary-General of the Japan Council Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs shared her advocacy on behalf of nuclear testing survivors in the Marshall Islands and Japan. She noted growing public support for the TPNW in Japan, where 60–70% of citizens now favor ratification and 85% support participation as observers.
Taraem Taukaro, a young activist from Christmas Island in Kiribati who NAPF sponsored to attend the 3MSP, offered deeply personal testimony about the lingering effects of the British and U.S. nuclear testing in her homeland. She recalled,“Each time a test was conducted, children could be heard crying in fear.” She further described the unexplained medical conditions she experienced as a child and stressed the need for medical assistance for her family and others like hers. “The TPNW provides a glimmer of hope,” she said, expressing her dream of a future where her children can grow up healthy and free of the burdens passed down through generations. High School Peace Messengers from Hiroshima and Nagasaki also spoke, urging continued intergenerational commitment to ensuring that no one else suffers the horrors of nuclear war.
The NGO segment highlighted youth-driven advocacy in action. Maverick Peter Seda, RTT Pacific Coordinator, described his role in helping the Solomon Islands ratify the TPNW, using art and university-based events through the RTT initiative to bring disarmament closer to home. Asuka Oka, a former NAPF intern and RTT activist, shared her work in connecting nuclear disarmament to climate change advocacy, especially through social media. She emphasized the shared existential risks posed by both nuclear weapons and ecological collapse—and the power of young people to drive change on both fronts.
Closing the event, Kenneth Chiu, Communications and Media Coordinator at NAPF, reflected on his journey from intern to full-time advocate, beginning with the launch of RTT in January 2021—the same month the TPNW entered into force. He shared a defining moment at a side event where a French diplomat dismissed a panel he sat on—including the governors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki—as “naïve.” In response, Chiu said: “Deterrence is a theory. Ask affected communities if they are part of the real world. Ask the Marshall Islands, French Polynesia, the Southwest U.S., Kazakhstan, and Japan.” He closed his remarks by emphasizing, “Our goal is to stigmatize nuclear weapons and work toward abolition.”
The event reinforced the urgent need to center human experience in disarmament policy. Through survivor testimony, youth activism, and high-level engagement, the message was clear: the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons must remain at the heart of global discourse. The TPNW is not just a treaty—it is a path forward rooted in dignity, justice, and hope.
