On July 27, 2024, Dr. Ivana Nikolić Hughes, President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, will deliver the keynote address at the Annual International Peace Symposium, which will take place at the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. Founded in 1995 and now in its 30th year, the Peace Symposium brings together Japanese and outside experts with atomic bomb survivors and activists to not only remember the atomic bombings each and every year, but to imagine a world without nuclear weapons – the only guarantee that such atrocities will never happen again.

In addition to Dr. Hughes’s keynote address, the symposium will include two panels where participants will discuss contemporary challenges to nuclear abolition and the plight of the global hibakusha – survivors of nuclear testing from around the world. In addition to being the 30th symposium year, this year also marks the 70th anniversary of the Bravo hydrogen bomb test in the Marshall Islands. The Bravo test represents a particularly dark moment in the history of the nuclear age, when many innocent Marshallese people were exposed to large amounts of radiation, which has led to decades of suffering, displacement, and devastating health outcomes in communities throughout the Marshall Islands. In addition, a small group of Japanese fishermen was exposed to deadly fallout from the test, leading to the death of one of them just months later. The event sparked an awakening in the Japanese public to the dangers of atomic and hydrogen bombs, leading to decades of anti-nuclear weapons activism in Japan, which continues to this day.
